World's largest game of Pong

World's largest game of Pong

To celebrate the 40th birthday of Pong — one of the earliest arcade video games — its maker, Atari, has turned a 22-story building in Kansas City into what may be the "world's largest game of Pong."

While the authorities of Guinness World Records haven't made that title official, the whole setup is pretty impressive.

Nik Wallenda set world record for tightrope walk across Niagara Falls

Nik Wallenda set world record for tightrope walk across Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS, — When Nik Wallenda sets out for his tightrope walk over Niagara Falls late Friday, he’ll be adding another chapter to his family’s storied daredevil history which dates back more than two centuries. Wallenda has said he is disappointed he is being made to wear a tether by the event’s sponsor, ABC, since his family has performed over the years without such safety precautions.

All signs are pointing to "go" for Nik Wallenda's dramatic attempt tonight to become the first person to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope.

Crowds are beginning to gather for a good viewing spot for the spectacle. The Niagara Parks Commission estimates that the Canadian side of the Falls could be jammed with 120,000 people by the time the slow-moving action gets underway.

Wallenda told CTV this morning that he's ready for the historic walk and feels like "a kid on Christmas morning."

If he's successful, Wallenda would become the first tightrope walker to do his thing over the base of the Falls. Several others have crossed over the Niagara Gorge just downstream from the Falls more than a century ago.

In the last few days, the 33-year-old daredevil has been practising his craft and overseeing the installation of a five-centimetre-wide steel wire cable that has been strung 60 metres above the churning waters.

Tonight's weather forecast for Niagara Falls calls for clear skies and a temperature of around 20 C at the scheduled walk time. But since he'll be so close to the plunging waters, he'll likely have to deal with misty conditions.

Wallenda, who hails from a long line of high-wire artists, will begin his 500-metre-long stroll from the American side shortly after 10 p.m. ET tonight.

The Tree Man of Java - Human Treeman Dede Koswara Pictures

The Tree Man of Java - Human Treeman Dede Koswara Pictures

Dede Koswara is a 35 year old fisherman in Indonesia. As a teenager, he cut his knee, and ever since then strange growths have covered his body. The growths on his hands and feet look especially like tree roots, and the large patches on his skin resemble the bark of a tree. As such, he’s simply called Tree Man.

Dede is thought to suffer from a tongue-twister of a disease known as Epidermodysplasia verruciformis. What this means is that he has an abnormal susceptibility to human pappilomaviruses. Human pappilomaviruses (HPVs) are extremely easy to contract, and it has been suggested that up to 80% of people may be infected, though they show no symptoms. There are around 200 known types of HPV, but the majority have no noticeable affect. In rare instances, it can lead to certain forms of cancer, but the most common result of an HPV infection is your simple, everyday wart.

Because of Dede’s body’s inability to stop the development of these growths on his skin, they have simply become larger and larger over time. The hands and feet are especially vulnerable to HPV, and as such his “roots” have grown especially large there.

For 20 years, the case has baffled doctors. While scientists understand the cause of his problem, nobody has been able to truly cure it yet. In 2007, Dede made international news when he hit the Internet and was featured in “My Shocking Story” on the Discovery Channel and TLC. (This show is “Extraordinary People” in the United Kingdom.) Later, in 2008, he was the subject of an episode of the popular program “Medical Mystery” as well.

World's fastest movie shot by DESY's X-ray laser FLASH in Hamburg

World's fastest movie shot by DESY's X-ray laser FLASH in Hamburg

The world's fastest movie was shot by DESY's X-ray laser FLASH in Hamburg. In its 2012 edition, the famous Guinness Book of World Records lists an interval of a mere 50 femtoseconds between two frames for FLASH. A femtosecond is a quadrillionth of a second, meaning that the two images are separated by just 0.000 000 000 000 05 seconds – this is 800 billion times faster than a feature film.

On Thursday, Professor Stefan Eisebitt from Technische Universität Berlin and the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin will present the record slow motion at the DESY light sources users' meeting. As the film motif for the demonstration of the technique his group chose a micro model of the Brandenburg Gate, spanning only a few micrometres.

The specialised light sources at DESY offer scientists unique insights into the world of atoms and molecules and attracted more than 2500 guest users in 2011 alone. More than 600 participants registered for the three-day users' meeting organised jointly by DESY and the European XFEL.

"The novel X-ray lasers will offer high speed films of ultrafast molecular processes and chemical reactions for a better understanding of these processes," emphasises DESY's director of research Professor Edgar Weckert. At FLASH, Eisebitt and his team demonstrated the fastest imaging sequence so far. For this purpose, the scientists split the X-ray laser beam into two flashes and sent one of them via a detour of only 0.015 millimetres, making it arrive 50 femtoseconds later than the first one. Since no detector can be read out so fast, the scientists stored both images as superimposed holograms, allowing the subsequent reconstruction of the single images.

With these experiments, the scientists showed that this record slow motion is achievable. However, they did not only take the world's fastest but probably also the shortest film – with just two images. Thus, additional development work is necessary for the use of this method in practice.

3D StreetMural - London artists 3D Joe and Max to create world’s largest 3D painting

3D Street Mural photo - London artists 3D Joe and Max to create world’s largest 3D painting

The largest mural ever was completed Thursday, as part of the seventh annual Guinness World Records Day. British artists '3D Joe & Max,' with their incredible 3D street mural that measures a whopping 9,601 square feet, joined over 300,000 other people as they all attempted to break various records around the world.

On Guinness World Records Day, November 17 2011, Reebok and CrossFit took fitness to another dimension in Canary Wharf. On their mission to empower people around the globe to be fit for life, both companies collaborated with London artists “3D Joe and Max” to officially create the world’s largest 3D painting.

With 1 160.4m² and a length of 106.5 metres, London-based artist Joe Hill and his team achieved this incredible feat and smashed the previous record of 892.15 m² held by Chinese artist Qi Xinghua.

The unique painting, technically referred to as anamorphic street art, shows dangerous drops and cliff edges and will be on public display until Saturday, November 19th. It encourages pedestrians, who pass by to work out and try functional CrossFot movements. This includes pull-ups and kettle bell swings, while they seem to be hanging above a cliff or standing on the edge of an escarpment.

Reebok and CrossFit announced their partnership earlier this year and aim to change the way people around the world perceive, define and experience fitness. “Everyone knows that fitness is important, but it’s not something that people do because they want to do it,” said Chris Froio, Reebok’s Global Head of Fitness, “Our partnership with CrossFit is not just about creating cutting-edge fitness footwear and apparel, or sponsoring fitness competitions – we have partnered with CrossFit because it is an extremely effective fitness programme and a unique fitness experience that creates a fun, social community. The combination of delivering results while keeping people coming back for more is a life-changing fitness experience that you can’t put a price on”.

weirdest world records - Alastair Galpin sets a world record for most number of lit candles in his mouth

weirdest world records 2011 - Alastair Galpin sets a world record for most number of lit candles in his mouth

New Zealand milestones in women's suffrage, mountain climbing and athletics are rightly celebrated.

We're the first country to give women the vote, and the home of the first person to climb Mt Everest and the first athlete to run a mile under three minutes and 50 seconds.

But less well known is that New Zealand is also home to a number of other world records.

Whether it's squeezing three people into a small box, throwing washing machines and people the furthest distance, or eating the most sausages in one minute - New Zealanders know how to break records.

About 100 records have either been broken by New Zealanders or in New Zealand, according to the Guinness World Records website.

Today is Guinness World Records Day, where thousands of people worldwide attempt to break records.

Last year on Guinness World Records Day 300,000 people tried to break records across the globe.

Today, Australia is trying to break the record for the most ABBA impersonators in one place, Italy will try to create the longest chocolate bar and Dublin is hoping to become the home of the largest ever gathering of leprechauns.

We've devised a top 10 list of crazy Guinness World Records that New Zealanders hold.

* Candle-lighting, side-jumping, clapping Alastair Galpin has dedicated his life to breaking records. The South African, who now resides in Auckland, is one of the top Guinness World Record holders. He's broken records for the most side jumps in a minute (90), the most gloves on one hand in a minute (13) and the most lit candles in the mouth (8). He's also clapped the loudest (113 decibels), created the largest bottle cap sculpture and flicked a coin the furthest distance (12.11 metres).

* Contortionists Skye Broberg, Nele Siezen and Jola Siezen hold the record for staying in a small box for the longest time. The friends spent just over six minutes in a box, smaller than one square metre, in 2009.

* Martin Reuben de Jong smashed a record in 2009 when he ran through 15 panes of glass consecutively. His record-breaking feat was broadcast on the NZ Smashes Guinness World Records show, which featured a number of New Zealanders record-breaking attempts.

* New Zealand is also home to an unintentional record - 'the greatest distance between same offence, arresting officer and offender'. In 2010, a British man received a ticket for speeding from Police Constable Andy Flitton near Christchurch. The offender recognised the constable as the same officer who had given him a ticket for speeding near London in the UK in 2008. Both had migrated to New Zealand.

* Hopefully Stefan Paladin likes sausages, because he stuffed eight whole sausages into his mouth and ate them all within one minute - earning himself a place in the Guinness World Records. Paladin broke the record at Ericsson Stadium on July 22, 2001.

* Clint Hallman holds a record, though it's probably one he'd rather not have. Hallman lost his hand in a chainsaw accident in the mid 80s. He was the first person to have a hand transplant operation. He received the hand from a dead motorcyclist in 1998 but told the BBC that his body rejected it a year later.

* Jonathan Macfarlane has a strong arm, but instead of throwing balls, he's more experienced in throwing people. Macfarlane holds two records - one for throwing a person (4.87 metres), and the other a washing machine (4.015m), the furthest distance. He broke both records in 2009 and Andrew Rainford sacrificed his bones when he volunteered to be the object of Macfarlane's throw.

* New Zealand is also home to a couple of group records. Three hundred and 50 people walked over fire, one after the other, at the New Zealand International Fire Festival in 2004, breaking the record for 'most people firewalking consecutively'. Two years later, 772 people throughout New Zealand had their heads shaved during a Child Cancer Foundation fundraiser, breaking the record for 'most heads shaved in one hour'.

* Bet you didn't know that New Zealand-born Jeannie Reiman was the oldest female racing driver. Reiman still holds the record, eight years after she secured it, at the age of 90.

* The largest wasp nest ever recorded was discovered in 1963 and was 3.7m long and 1.75m in diameter. It was discovered on a farm at Waimaukau and was so heavy that it had fallen from the tree and had split in two. It had probably been constructed by introduced German wasps.

Biggest Dodgeball Game set world record

Organizers at the University of Alberta attempted to shatter a world record by hosting a 1,000-person dodgeball game. And while the Edmonton Sun notes that "it will be several months before officials from the Guinness World Records verify the accomplishment," the attempt appears to have been successful.

The previous record, set at San Diego State University, was a 450-person match. Alberta students and staff obliterated the old mark by organizing an epic showdown with 1,200 participants. Scroll down to see footage from the event.
