Boston Marathon wheelchair race sets world record by Joshua Cassidy

Ottawa-born Joshua Cassidy was the surprise winner Monday of the men’s wheelchair race at the Boston Marathon.

Cassidy, 27, added to the emotional victory by setting a world and course record time of time one hour, 18 minutes 25 seconds for the 42.195-kilometre distance.

South African Ernst Van Dyk set the record of 1:18:27 in 2004 on the Boston course.

Australia’s Kurt H. Fearnley was a distant second in 1:21:39, and Kota Hokinoue of Japan was third in 1:23:26.

A freelance illustrator, Cassidy led from the five-kilometre mark. When the former Ottawa Marathon champion reached the top of the course’s Heartbreak Hill (32 kilometres), he started to focus on breaking the records.

“Once I got to the top of Heartbreak, I knew I could win the race,” said Cassidy, who got his start in Paralympic wheelchair racing with Bob Schrader and Amanda Fader at the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club.

“So off I went, battling on my own the rest of the way to see if I could get the record.”

Cassidy, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma (cancer in the spine and abdomen) weeks after his birth and is a double leg amputee athlete, earned $15,000 for winning the men’s wheelchair race and a bonus of $10,000 for a world-best time.

Walt Disney World Marathon 2012 - Marathon World Record 2012

This weekend Central Florida is the center of the running world as thousands lace up their tennis shoes and pound the pavement!

More than 50,000 people are taking over the happiest place on earth for the 19th annual Walt Disney World Marathon weekend.

The first run, which started at about 5:35 a.m. Saturday, was a half marathon had an estimated 26,500 runners. The second run Sunday morning will be a full marathon – 26.2 miles. There are even some runners who will take part in both marathons – known as the “Goofy Challenge,” which will be a combined 39.3 miles!

It’s not just runners who will be shine in the races this weekend, some reality stars will take part in the marathons. Ethan Zohn, from Survivor/Amazing Race, Jenna Morasca, from Survivor/Amazing Race, and Trista and Ryan Sutter, from the Bachelor, are among the celebrities entered in the weekend of events at Walt Disney World Resort.

All are running in the half marathon on Saturday along with four wounded veterans who are part of the Achilles Freedom Team, which supports disabled runners. Workout guru Tony Horton, founder of the P90X workout, will be on hand to prepare runners for their race.

To commemorate the 15th anniversary of the half marathon, all finishers will be awarded a one-of-a-kind Donald Duck half marathon medal.

Oldest marathon runner - Fauja Singh sets world record in Toronto

A 100-year-old man began Thursday with a sprint and ended with eight world records.

Fauja Singh ran through eight track events in succession at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough as part of a charity event, Sikhs in the City.

Singh, who lives in England but hails from India, is in town to compete in Sunday’s Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon as he tries to set a Guinness World Record. Along the way, he decided to crush a few records.

Singh began by breezing through 100 metres in 23.40 seconds. Usain Bolt holds the all-ages record at 9.58 seconds. Singh destroyed the previous record for a 100-year-old by more than six seconds. The races became progressively longer and culminated in the 5,000-metre event.

He scared the crowd in that event when he needed to walk for a few laps. But it was just a leg cramp, which abated after a calf massage and a glass of salt water.

“I didn’t push myself hard enough today,” Singh said in Punjabi to a chorus of laughter.

“I think I’ll let him race Sunday,” said a serious Harmander Singh, his coach and interpreter. “This injury is nothing.”

While Fauja Singh struggled to keep up with his competitors throughout the day — some were 60 years younger — he bested a 61-year-old woman in three races.

Nachhatar Kaur wasn’t as swift as Singh in the 100-metre, 200-metre or 800-metre races.

“I really should have done better,” she said with a huge smile, “since he has 40 years on me. But he’s inspired me to keep running.”

Running — and smashing records — gave Singh some focus following the death of his wife and son. He became suicidal after watching a piece of sheet metal decapitate his son. Then he moved to England to be near his other son.

Hamilton man attempt to break Guinness World Record for marathon drumming

The 40-year-old cancer survivor has been playing the skins at the Burlington Music Centre since Friday at 8 a.m. in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for marathon drumming.

If Gaul can keep the sticks going past Wednesday at 8:01 a.m., he will have surpassed the record of 120 hours of drummming.

Gaul is hoping to raise $1 million for the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of his sister Toni, who battled paranasal cancer for five years before dying last year. Gaul survived testicular cancer.

“Gaul is doing as well as can be expected. His ears are starting to hurt and he’s looking a bit tired but he’s hanging in there,” his fiance Casey Stinchcombe, said after he reached the 102-hour mark.

For every hour of continuous play Gaul receives a five minute break, which he can either use immediately or bank up for later use. At the 102 hour mark Gaul had banked more than 45 minutes.

“It looks like he’s going to make it this year and with that 45 minutes saved, he can take a power nap,” Stinchcombe said.

Stinchcombe said Gaul’s diet has included meatballs, chicken and shrimp, chocolate bars, scallops, bacon and eggs, and protein shakes.

This is Gaul’s second attempt at breaking the record. Last year he managed to drum for 70 hours straight before dropping out.

“I am doing this because I wish to ‘pay it forward,’ Gaul wrote on his website before he started the drum marathon. “Thanks to amazing advances in technology I survived. A lot of people worked really hard to make that possible. Without them, I would not be here today. I owe it to them... I owe it to those who have not yet been diagnosed with cancer...No one should ever have to go through what I went through.”

His sister was his inspiration on the first attempt at the record last year and he wanted to inspire her to stay strong and fight her courageous battle, he wrote.

“Toni lost her battle but the war is not over, Gaul said. “My mother has spent nearly a decade watching her children suffer with cancer. No one should have to witness that.”

By the end of the marathon, Gaul will have played hundreds of songs. There is a DJ spinning rock songs, as well as live bands who have joined him.

Incidentally, the winner of the race was Emmanuel Mutai of Kenya with a new course record of 2:04:40. This makes him the 9th winner with a time less than 2:05. The female winner was Mary Keitany with a time of 2:19:19.

Oldest woman to finish a Honolulu marathon set Guinness World Record by Gladys Burrill

London, Apr 6: A British woman, aged 92, has broken the world record for the oldest person ever to complete a marathon.

Gladys Burrill, a part-time Hawaii resident nicknamed the "Gladyator", finished the Honolulu Marathon in 9 hours 53 minutes after she had trained for the testing 26.2-mile course by walking 2,600 miles.

Her feat at the race last December has been recognised by the World Records Academy and by USA Track and Field.

She beat the previous record held by Jenny Wood-Allen of Dundee, Scotland, who was 90 years old when she completed the 2002 London Marathon.

Burrill, who was a multi-engine aircraft pilot, mountain climber, desert hiker and horseback rider before she ran her first marathon in 2004 at the age of 86, walks 45 miles a week.

She was asked to give advice to others wanting a long and healthy lifestyle.

"Just get out there and walk or run. I like walking because you can stop and smell the roses, but it's a rarity that I stop," the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.

"It's so important to think positive. It's easy to get discouraged and be negative. It makes such a difference in how you feel and your outlook on everything," she stated.

Guinness World Records confirmed Burrill's achievement, and the Hawaii House of Representatives honoured her with a certificate during a ceremony on April 4.

Burrill said her positive attitude gave her the strength to start running marathons, along with her regular routine of walking dozens of miles a week near her home.

Glady Burrill - World Oldest Marathon Women Runner enters Guinness World Record 2011

Hawaii is home to another record holder and she has turned that into a generous donation to our Lokahi Giving Project.

We have followed her progress over the years - 92 year old Gladys "Glady Burrill now enters the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest female marathoner.

"Well, I've always walked or ran and all through the year, I've been out there about three or four times a week. And walked as far as I wanted to. And in April I had to prove to myself that I could do it again because I hadn't finished for two years," said Burrill.

Glady went through a rough couple of years personally and in the marathon. But she is, if nothing else, competitive just years after she was born in 1918.

"I loved to compete with the boys, playing ball and everything - sliding into home base with a dress because we didn't wear pants, we wore dresses," said Burrill.

No one is prouder of Glady's record setting accomplishment in the marathon than race director Jim Barahal.

"And we decided that it might be appropriate to honor her accomplishment by giving something back to the community, so we asked Glady which charity she would like to make a donation to and the marathon is assisting her with that," said marathon director Jim Barahal.

Barahal and the marathon organization donated $2,500 in Glady's name to our Lokahi Giving Project.

"Her stories are just amazing and it's just exactly what it takes to run a program like this and she has the whole spirit of the project and she lives it every day," said Mariellen Jones of Lokahi.

Glady Burrill says she has a special place in her heart for those in need, especially this time of year.

"We were very poor and in need so I understand very well what these people are experiencing that need help. It breaks my heart to see them with problems," said Burrill.

There will be fewer problems now thanks to the Honolulu marathon and the woman they call - the Glady-ator.

Andy Murray set a world record by running 3,000 miles in 85 DAYS

DAREDEVIL doc Andy Murray plans to set a world record by running 3,000 miles in 85 DAYS - with NO time off.

The 30-year-old aims to make as many headlines across the world as his tennis namesake by running more than 30 miles a day from John O'Groats to the Sahara desert in North Africa.

The gruelling charity challenge, which begins on November 8, will see the Aberdeen GP complete eight miles MORE than a marathon every day for nearly three months.

Japan's Akinori Kusuda, 65, ran the 26.2-mile distance 52 days in a row last year to claim the Guinness World Record for the most marathons run on consecutive days.

But if Andy achieves his amazing feat the world record will be his.

He said: "It would be amazing to be the benchmark for marathon running. I'm not at that stage yet though so I need to keep focused on getting the job done."

Andy admits his Scotland-to-Sahara adventure is the biggest challenge of his life and his preparations are as brutal as the journey that awaits him.

He plans to run a whopping 100 miles every week until the day his expedition begins.

He is fitting in a night each at his local tennis and squash clubs and two games of five-a-side with his friends to toughen-up his training schedule.

Last weekend, he shattered the record for running the length of Hadrian's Wall by finishing the 84-mile stretch in 16 hours and 59 minutes - THREE HOURS faster than previous holder Jon Watts.

This Saturday, he is tackling Skye's spectacular Cuillin Ridge, a range of mountains regarded as one of the UK's most daunting.

Andy said: "I'm so tired at the moment from all the training. And I know that by December I'll feel twice as exhausted.

"I'm not complaining though. The best thing you can do is forget about what you're doing.

"When I'm running or taking part in any sport, I lose all my thoughts. I'm determined to push myself to the max for this."

John O'Groats to Sahara Desert

DETERMINED Andy starts his epic journey at John O'Groats on November 8.

He'll head south after stopping off to climb Ben Nevis on day five.

Then he will pass through England, France and Spain before enduring temperatures of up to 45°C (113°F) in the Sahara. The adventure finishes in Merzouga, Morocco on January 27.

Andy said: "In Spain and Morocco I'll have to run with a SLEDGE because of the sand.

"It will carry my food, juice, waterproofs, Vaseline, painkillers, passport and money. It'll be tough, but there's just no way round it."

Andy has been taking running tips from marathon man Mark Cooper, 27.

The pair teamed up for the Hadrian's Wall run on Saturday.

Edinburgh office worker Mark ran 50 marathons in 56 days - 1,310 miles from Holland to Spain - earlier this year.

Corona set a world record for the most marathons walked in a year

The 51-year-old Corona resident walked 77 marathons last year. Actually, 18 were ultramarathons, longer than 26.2 miles. She walked 65 marathons in 2008. Her personal best: 5 hours, 26 minutes -- faster than a 13-minute mile.

"My goal this year is to do all of them under six hours," Holder said. She described her technique as "a little bit of race walk, a little bit of power walk, a little bit of get-it-done."

It's unclear whether anybody's even established a world record for most marathons walked in a year.

The Guinness World Records 2010 book does not include such a listing; a search of its Web site didn't yield one, either. Guinness officials did not immediately respond to an interview request.

According to Seattle-based running group Marathon Maniacs President Steve Yee and Runner's World magazine, a Texas attorney named Larry Macon holds the Guinness record for the most marathons run in a year, at 105, set in 2008.

Holder has mapped out a schedule making the Las Vegas marathon on Dec. 5 her 100th, but figures she's got time for Honolulu on Dec. 12, Tucson, Dec. 13 and maybe a few more before the year runs out. That will often mean two marathons in a weekend, with a flight in between.

The hectic travel schedule doesn't tire Holder. In fact, "it's more exciting than the marathon," she laughs. She travels light and uses flight time to write in her journal and check her schedule of upcoming races to be sure she's got all her logistics right -- though sometimes with the sheer number of events she's juggling, she overlooks something.

On Jan. 15 she had to scramble and drive from Corona to Phoenix for a marathon the next day. She had forgotten to book a flight. That wasn't her lowest moment, though. The altitude of the Leadville, Colo., ultramarathon sapped her strength, she said, reducing her to tears, and heat exhaustion knocked her out of one 50-mile event.

Holder no longer needs to train and requires no recovery time, but does Pilates twice weekly to strengthen her lower back. "My body likes it (the walking)," she said. "I don't like running. It hurts my knees."

Marathon World record holder to run New York Half Marathon in March

Gebrselassie is the current marathon world record-holder and a two-time Olympic 10,000-meter champion

"I"m very excited about going back to New York," Gebrselassie said.

"I got such a warm welcome when I ran the Half-Marathon in 2007. I"m sure it will be a wonderful event again and I'm looking forward to it."

According to the AFP:"The 36-year-old long distance legend last competed in a US event in 2007, when he won the New York Half-Marathon in a race-record 59 minutes, 24 seconds. Gebrselassie will seek a 20,000-dollar top prize in the 100,000-dollar event."

Gebrselassie holds the world marathon record of 2:03:59 which he set at the 2008 Berlin Marathon. He is also almost undefeated at the half marathon distance having won 9 out of the 10 the ten half marathon's he's raced.
