Dede Koswara is a 35 year old fisherman in Indonesia. As a teenager, he cut his knee, and ever since then strange growths have covered his body. The growths on his hands and feet look especially like tree roots, and the large patches on his skin resemble the bark of a tree. As such, he’s simply called Tree Man.

Dede is thought to suffer from a tongue-twister of a disease known as Epidermodysplasia verruciformis. What this means is that he has an abnormal susceptibility to human pappilomaviruses. Human pappilomaviruses (HPVs) are extremely easy to contract, and it has been suggested that up to 80% of people may be infected, though they show no symptoms. There are around 200 known types of HPV, but the majority have no noticeable affect. In rare instances, it can lead to certain forms of cancer, but the most common result of an HPV infection is your simple, everyday wart.

Because of Dede’s body’s inability to stop the development of these growths on his skin, they have simply become larger and larger over time. The hands and feet are especially vulnerable to HPV, and as such his “roots” have grown especially large there.

For 20 years, the case has baffled doctors. While scientists understand the cause of his problem, nobody has been able to truly cure it yet. In 2007, Dede made international news when he hit the Internet and was featured in “My Shocking Story” on the Discovery Channel and TLC. (This show is “Extraordinary People” in the United Kingdom.) Later, in 2008, he was the subject of an episode of the popular program “Medical Mystery” as well.

Japanese Monkey Man - Kenichi Ito Holds World Record In Four-Legged Running (pics & Video)

The 29-year-old Tokyo man has spent the past eight and a half years developing a four-legged running style modeled after the African Patas monkey, according to Reuters. The process has involved Ito walking around his suburban neighborhood and performing household chores on all fours, and even squatting like a simian while talking to others.

This lifestyle is no monkey business, though.

In November 2008, Ito set the world record for running 100 meters on all fours. His time was 18.58 seconds, according to Guinness World Records.

In addition to his speedy gallop, Ito has developed five other distinct styles of movement on all fours, the International Business Times reported. He draws inspiration from the animal world, utilizing both the Internet and his season ticket to the zoo.

Ito has had to endure more than just curious stares for the sake of his craft. He told Reuters that while practicing in the mountains, he was almost shot by a hunter who mistook him for a wild boar.

His dedication stems from a love of monkeys that dates back to childhood, according to ITV News. Ito says he has identified with the animals from an early age, and that "somewhere inside of me I had this ambition to adopt one of their traits." Ito found this trait when he saw a monkey running quickly. "From that point on," he said, "I practiced running like a monkey every day."

World’s largest feet set Guinness World Record by Brahim Takioullah


PARIS: The first thing that people notice about Brahim Takioullah is not his feet — which he hopes will make him famous — but his enormous height. He stands more than eight foot (246 cm) tall.

Judges from Guinness World Records came to France to measure him and confirmed his suspicion that he had record-breaking feet — his left measuring one foot three inches (38.1 cm) in length and his right, one foot 2.76 inches.

Takioullah cannot stand up straight in the small flat he shares with his mother in the Paris suburbs, has difficulty getting into a taxi or the Metro, and can never move around without attracting attention.

But he is surprisingly good humoured about his situation, smiling and posing for cellphone snaps and politely answering questions about his condition, a rare medical problem that he hopes to cure through surgery.

Takioullah is from Morocco, and grew up in a small village — grew up fast.

In one year in his teens he put on more than three feet (one metre) in a spurt.

Now 29, no-one thought to investigate his unusual size until he was 18.

“The school doctor noticed that I was this enormous size and asked me to get some blood tests. I did that, and I was diagnosed with a very rare condition called acromegaly,” he told AFP.

Acromegaly is a pituitary gland disorder that causes the body to produce excessive growth hormone. The brain tumour can lead to other problems aside from great size, and Takioullah was advised to seek surgery.

But first he decided to finish his university studies in geography. When he began treatment, he was already huge and closing in on the world’s tallest man, eight-foot three-inch (2.51 metre) Sultan Kosen of Turkey.

Five years ago, a French doctor brought him to Paris for treatment, and he is not expected to reach Sultan’s height record.

Takioullah contacted Guinness himself to challenge for the record, and says he is proud to have it recognised, though daily life is not without its problems.

He hopes one day to have a specially built car he could drive himself, but for now even getting a pair of shoes stretches his budget — he takes a European size 58, which no shop has ever stocked.

“I always need them made-to-measure and they’re very expensive. I once asked a cobbler to make me some shoes and he said it would cost 3,500 euros (5,270 dollars),” he sighed.

This week he met an orthopedic podiatrist to be fitted with a specially made pair designed to support his huge weight.

“The thing is, when you have a very very large foot, even the machine to make the components isn’t necessarily big enough. So we really had to work right on the edge of the machinery.” said Jerome Liegeon.

French doctors are working to reduce Takioullah’s brain tumour, and he hopes his newfound fame will help him find the specialist treatment he needs.

The latest edition of the Guinness Book of World Records boasts a number of record-breaking feats by Southern Californians.

Los Angeles resident Chanel Tapper, for example, can claim the state's longest tongue. Yup, that's right. Her tongue, according to Guinness, measures 3.8 inches from tip to top lip. She got beat out, though, for the world record by Stephen Taylor of the United Kingdom, whose licker measures 3.86 inches.

Local collectors also top the charts. Denise Tabangui of San Jacinto owns 2,429 cow-related items as of March 2011. The collection began in 1990 when she saw a cow figurine in her mother's kitchen. Now she needs a lot more than a kitchen to hold her own cow menagerie, which includes a life-sized calf that her neighbors gave her as a present.


Charlotte Lee of Huntington Beach owns 5,249 different rubber ducks -– enough for the record books. Her rubber friends are kept in glass showcases in a dedicated duck room.

Then there's W.R. 'Rusty' Haight of San Diego, who owns the dubious distinction of being in the most car collisions. By February 2003, the traffic collision reconstructionist had endured 718 collisions as a human crash-test dummy.

In all, there are 2,500 new records in the Guinness Book of World Records, including 39 Southern California records, a spokesman for the book says. So take heart, there's still hope for the rest of us next year.

*Chris “The Dutchess” Walton, a Las Vegas singer, recently made it into the 2012 Guinness Book of World Records for having 20 feet of nails on both hands.

And the Dutchess, 45, is proud of her nails, which she started growing 18 years ago.

“It’s kind of like a body part I was born with,” she told the New York Daily News.  “Now I don’t know what I would do without them.

“I’m pretty sure one day I will cut them, but I can’t see it in my head because I’m so used to having them.”

She added, It’s like a leg, I wouldn’t just chop it off so it’s gonna take some thinking.”

Now, that’s a nail biting thought.

“The Dutchess,” a mother of six girls and grandmother of three, says she started growing the nails by accident.

“I don’t know why I grew them. I just turned around and there they were,” she recalled.

No doubt her nails elicit comments and gasps wherever she goes.

The nail on her ring finger is the length of the average human arm, her left pinky nail is almost the height of a fire hydrant, and the middle finger on her left hand is as long as two hot dogs.

The rock singer claims that the nails do not pose an inconvenience and that she can cook, clean, drive and wash with ease.

She even texts using her knuckles.

The only problem she has encountered is that she has to alter her clothing.

“If I like a jacket, I’ll take the seam out of the arm and replace it with a zipper so I can get my nails in the sleeves,” she revealed.

When her husband-to-be ended their relationship, Donna thought it was time for a change. A few months ago, after she and her fiance broke up, the Ohio native moved from New Jersey to Akron, near where she was raised. The change of scenery has inspired her to try to alter her lifestyle.

As she told HuffPost:

    "It's fine to gain weight when you have a partner who will help feed you and take care of everything around you, but that's between two adult people who make the choice. I realized that I couldn't expect my kids to do that for me."

Rafflesia arnoldii is a member of the genus Rafflesia. It is noted for producing the largest individual flower on earth, and a strong odor of decaying flesh – the latter point earning it the nickname of “corpse flower”. It occurs only in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo in the Indonesian Archipelago. Although there are some plants with larger flowering organs like the Titan Arum and Talipot palm, those are technically clusters of many flowers.

Several species of Rafflesia grow in the jungles of southeast Asia, including the Philippines. Many of them are threatened or endangered. The flower of Rafflesia arnoldii is the largest which attains a diameter of nearly one meter (3 ft) and can weigh up to 11 kilograms (24 lb).

It lives as a parasite on the Tetrastigma vine, which grows only in primary (undisturbed) rainforests. Rafflesia lacks any observable leaves, stems or even roots, yet is still considered a vascular plant. Similar to fungi, individuals grow as thread-like strands of tissue completely embedded within and in intimate contact with surrounding host cells from which nutrients and water are obtained.

Perhaps the only part of Rafflesia that is identifiable as distinctly plant-like are the flowers; although, even these are unusual since they attain massive proportions, have a reddish-brown coloration and stink of rotting flesh, which is why it was nicknamed the “corpse flower”. This scent attracts insects such as flies which then pollinate the rare plant. It is not to be confused with the Titan Arum, Amorphophallus titanum, which is also commonly referred to as the “corpse flower”.

Rafflesia arnoldii is rare and fairly hard to locate. It is especially difficult to locate the flower in forests as the buds take many months to develop and the flower lasts for just a few days.

 The flowers are unisexual and thus proximity of male and female flowers is vital for successful pollination. These factors make successful pollination a rare event.

The astronomer Richard Nolle coined the term "Super Moon" which means a new or full moon at 90% or greater of its closest perigee to Earth. Well on March 19th the moon will be at perigee (its closest position in its orbit to Earth). This will be the closest perigee in 18 years.

The largest effect will be on the tide which occurs at the full moon every month as the closer to the earth the moon orbits, so the effect on tides increases. A 5% increase in proximity makes about 20% difference in the power the moon exerts so those in coastal regions should anticipate stronger tides.

An extreme "SuperMoon" is when the moon is full or new as well as at its 100% greater mean perigee (closest) distance to earth. By this definition, last month's full moon, this month's and next month's will all be extreme "SuperMoons".

Some largely internet-based claims say such events are related to catastrophies such as extreme siesmic events or extreme weather and some coincidential strong events have happened at the same time as Super Moons, however no definitive scientific research has concluded that.

A polygamous man from India has earned himself the world record for the biggest family. Ziona Chana, 66, has a record 39 wives, 94 children, 14-daughters-in-laws and 33 grandchildren. This brings the total number of family members to an astonishing 181 people.

Chana lives with his family in a 100-room, four-story house the family named 'Chhuan That Run' or the House of the New Generation. The house is located in Baktawng village, in the Indian state of Mizoram, and is completely operated by the family without any state support.

According to the Sun,"It has its own school, a playground, carpentry workshops, piggery and poultry farms, paddy fields - and a vegetable garden big enough to feed the entire extended family."

Chana states, "We don't want any help from the government," according to the World Records Academy.

"Today I feel like God's special child," said Chana. "He's given me so many people to look after, I consider myself a lucky man to be the husband of 39 women and head of the largest family."

According to a news report in the Sun, Chana is the hereditary leader of the Chana sect, a group that believes that one day they will rule the world through Christ.

In an effort to continue his legacy Chana states, "To expand my sect, I am willing to go even to the US to marry."

Le Yati Min - Most fingers and toes for a living person set Guinness World Record

Burma girl Le Yati Min has 12 fingers, 14 toes set Guinness World Record.

From almost the moment Le Yati Min was born, her mother knew the girl had a little something extra.

"I asked the nurses whether my kid was born complete with hands and legs," says her mother. "They replied that the baby even has more than she needs."

Born with 12 fingers and 14 toes, Le may be the most "digitally enhanced" person in the world. Now, the 16-month-old girl's family in impoverished Myanmar is seeking a Guinness World Record to prove it.

A neighbor is helping her mother apply to claim the record hearing that a boy from India currently hold bragging rights for the most digits, with 12 fingers and 13 toes.

Polydactylism — being born with an extra finger or toe — is fairly unusual, but it is even more rare for someone to have a spare functional digit on both hands and feet, as Le does.

Le lives with her family in a small wooden house on the outskirts of the Southeast Asian country's former capital of Yangon, where she runs around with seven toes on each foot.

Proud mom Phyo Min Min Soe, 26, said Tuesday that she'd be happen to see Le gain a world record, but even without that, her daughter already has a happy life, and even some natural advantages.

"She seems to have a stronger grip on things — so she doesn't drop things much," she says, as Le plays nearby with a mobile phone.

According to the Guinness World Records website, the record for most fingers and toes for a living person is currently held by two people in India, who have 12 fingers and 13 toes each.

Kerala - World's shortest cow set Guinness World Record by Suryaprakash

A youth in Kerala has claimed that he owns the shortest cow in the world which has a height of just 74 cm, shorter than the existing record holder and 83 cm-tall Swallow of the United Kingdom.

Keen to get his six-year-old cow registered with the Guinness Book of World Records, Suryaprakash from Muipoth village near here has also dented the recent claim of the Kerala Agricultural University that the 77-cm tall Diana at its farm is all set to take over the British cow's status.

Aptly named Chotti, which means small in Hindi, Prakash's pet has delivered thrice and is pregnant again.

A student of Chartered Accountancy, Suryaprakash's interest in farming and livestock rearing prompted him to own the cow that belongs to the breed known in the state as Kasargode Dwarf, when it was a calf about six years ago.

"I learnt from some farmers that the milk of this variety of cow has high nutritional and medicinal value. But what really sparked my interest was its short-stature, amiable disposition and adaptability," Suryaprakash told PTI.

"She never scares or kicks. Even children can go near her and play with her. She adapts herself easily to the surroundings of rearing but prefers to graze in open areas with fresh green grass, instead of artificial cattle feed or hay," said the proud owner.

Chotti yields 2.5 litres of milk per day on an average and its dung and urine are of higher bio-fertiliser value than those of the common varieties, he said.

Prakash said he would make a request to the Guinness authorities to get his cow's height certified by a competent veterinary surgeon.

The Centre for Animal Genetics and Breeding under the Kerala University had claimed last month that the 77 cm-tall Diana at its farm is the shortest cow, which can take over the record held by the Dexter cow from Britain.

Diana belongs to a breed called Vechur cows, saved from the brink of extinction through a conservation programme in the late 1980s. The Vechur cows derived their name from a village near the temple town of Vaikom in Kottayam district in the state, where they were reared in large numbers in the past on account of the high quality of their milk.

After extensive research as part of conservation efforts in the late 1980s, eight cows of the breed were traced in the state, with which the University started the conservation project.

Earlier, he had made a record of pulling a Maruti 800 car by his ears.

"There is a world record of peeling 51 coconuts using the teeth. My name has been enrolled in Limca Book of Records for pulling a Maruti 800 car from my ears. I can climb a 40-feet coconut tree holding a bicycle in my mouth, said Varma.

"I can even do stunts on a running motorcycle for half-an-hour without holding it. I want to set a record in Guinness Book of Records, and for I have been practicing hard with coconuts," he added.

 Dede Koswara, 37, who is also known as ‘The Tree Man of Java’ had underwent four major operations that hacked away the bark like tissue sprouting from his hands and feet. Dede was able to see the outline of his toes for the first time as medics removed more than 4lbs of warts from his body. Spending his last 20 years (his ordeal started when he was 15 and cut his knee where a small wart developed and spread) with the bizarre condition, Dede expressed that he wants to get better and find a job and hopes that one day he will meet a girl and get married.
    "This is the most remarkable case, the most severe case, I have seen in my career," said American doctor Anthony Gaspari at a news conference in Bandung, about a two-hour drive from capital city Jakarta.

    For Dede (who is known by his first name), what started as a simple wart on his knee as a teenager spiraled his life out of control when it became infected. Treelike growths gradually spread all over his legs, arms, chest and face.

    He became physically unable to do basic functions and everyday tasks.
    As a result of his condition, Dede lost his job, and his wife left him. He moved in with his parents and has been supported by extended family. His two kids often visit him at the hospital.

    Doctors have learned that Dede has a defect in his immune system. This defect doesn't allow him to control the type of human papilloma virus -- an extremely common virus that most of us develop an immunity to -- causing the warty growths on his skin. Their treatment plan is to control the tumorous growths and restore his immune system.

    Hopes are high for Dede to have a second chance at life.

Indian patient Prahlad Jani (Mataji), who claims he has survived without food and water for more than 70 Years.

Indian military scientists are studying an 82-year-old who claims he has not had any food or drink for 70 years.
Prahlad Jani is being held in isolation in a hospital in Ahmedabad, Gurjarat, where he is being closely monitored by India's defence research organization, who believe he may have a genuine quality which could help save lives.


He has now spent six days without food or water under strict observation and doctors say his body has not yet shown any adverse effects from hunger or dehydration.

Mr Jani, who claims to have left home aged seven and lived as a wandering sadhu or holy man in Rajasthan, is regarded as a 'breatharian' who can live on a 'spiritual life-force' alone. He believes he is sustained by a goddess who pours an 'elixir' through a hole in his palate. His claims have been supported by an Indian doctor who specializes in studies of people who claim supernatural abilities, but he has also been dismissed by others as a "village fraud."

India's Defence Research Development Organisation, whose scientists develop drone aircraft, intercontinental ballistic missiles and new types of bombs. They believe Mr Prahlad could teach them to help soldiers survive longer without food, or disaster victims to hang on until help arrives.

"If his claims are verified, it will be a breakthrough in medical science," said Dr G Ilavazhagan, director of the Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences.

"We will be able to help save human lives during natural disasters, high altitude, sea journeys and other natural and human extremities. We can educate people about the survival techniques in adverse conditions with little food and water or nothing at all."

So far, Mr Prahlad appears to be standing up to scrutiny. He has not eaten or drunk any fluids in six days, and similarly has not passed urine or a stool in that time. He remains fit and healthy and shows no sign of lethargy. Doctors will continue observing him for 15 days in which time they would expect to see some muscle wastage, serious dehydration, weight loss,and fatigue followed by organ failure.

It is common in India for Jains and Hindus to fast, sometimes for up to eight days, without any adverse affects, as part of their religious worship. Most humans cannot survive without food for 50 days. The longest hunger strike recorded is 74 days.

According to Dr Sudhir Shah, who examined him in 2003, he went without food or water for ten days in which urine appeared to be reabsorbed by his body after forming in his bladder. Doubts were expressed about his claim after his weight fell slightly at the end of the trial.
