Limca Book of record holder Chikka Bhanu Prakash hoping for Guinness World Record

A software engineer from the city, 26-year-old Chikka Bhanu Prakash entered the Guinness Book of Records on Sunday for the heaviest weight lifted by a fingernail.

The string broke off and the first attempt went wrong. Though visibly nervous, the 26-year-old marshalled his resolve and with his thumb nail tried again, pulling off a feat which he hopes would fetch him a Guinness World Record.

Chikka Bhanu Prakash, a software engineer on Sunday afternoon lifted 8.668 kgs weight with his left thumb nail and the effort would be sent to the Guinness World Record for appropriate documentation.

According to Prakash, the ‘Heaviest Weight Lifted By Fingernail' was in the open record category with Guinness Records and it meant there was no previous record documented. “I will be sending this record for documentation and hope it will be accepted,” said the MCA graduate presently employed with Innobox Systems.

V. Sreenathachary, a triple Guinness World Record holder himself, acted as witness and guided the event to ensure all the prescribed steps were in place for making the claim. “In this category, the weight should be lifted using nail at least to 10 cms from ground and held thus for five seconds,” he said.

Today at the event organised by the Greater Hyderabad Padmashali Sangham, Prakash who hails from Jablekpally village of Bhudan Pochampally, lifted 8.688 kgs weight till 26 cms from the ground and held it for 28 seconds.

“This is a record and with appropriate documentation, the effort will be forwarded for consideration,” Dr. Sreenathachary said. For the purpose of creating a record, a hole was drilled into the thumb nail and a string was used to tie the weights and lift them.

Born in a weaver's family, Prakash had already made it to the Limca Records for his work in nail art and also tried his nail for lifting weights at his native Bhudan Pochampally and also in Jaipur once. “But today, I followed the guidelines for an entry into Guinness Records and feel elated at having succeeded,” he added.

World's tallest Ravana effigy in Haryana’s Ambala set Limca Book of world record

Shri Ram Lila Club Barara claimed that world tallest effigy of demon king Ravana has been set ablaze at this suburb 25 kilo meters from Ambala. Founder of the club, Tejinder Singh Chauhan has informed that an effigy of a 185 feet record height has been raised this year which has found mention into the Limca Book of world records.

Brara village in Haryana’s Ambala district is in the Limca Book of Records for having erected the tallest effigy of demon-king Ravana at 175 feet in 2009. This time, as the effigy went up in smoke to mark Dusshera, it stood 10 feet taller at 185 feet.

The Ravana effigy, which took a few months to make at a cost of up to Rs.4 lakh, was loaded with several quintals of fireworks.

The effigy is erected with the efforts of a village club comprising of local youth and some philanthropists.

The village, 60 km from Chandigarh on the Ambala-Jagadhri highway, had first shot into fame in 2006 after it erected a 150-foot-tall Ravana.

“Artisans come specially from Uttar Pradesh to make the tallest Ravana. Simply making it stand requires several cranes and is a difficult job. But we are happy that our efforts have paid off and people like it,” village Ramlila committee president and philanthropist Tejinder Singh said.

Hundreds of people from nearby villages and towns throng to the village to catch a glimpse of one of the tallest Ravanas in the country.

“The Ravana is so tall. It must have taken so much of effort and planning. Seeing it going up in smoke was really amazing. This also proves that evil may become as big or tall but it has to finish one day,” village youth Surender said.

BHUBANESHWAR: Kehsab Swain from Odisha found a place in the 'Limca Book of Records' after he broke 250 green coconuts in just 8.56 minutes. Keshab achieved the milestone yesterday.

Keshab had earlier broken 184 green coconuts (poida) in 6 minutes 40 seconds in 2010. This time, he went a step further and achieved a rare milestone, bring glory to Odisha.

The green coconut-breaking event was organised at Rabindra Mandap in Bhubaneswar yesterday. Sports & Youth Affairs Minister, Badri Narayan Patra, Tourism & Culture Minister Prafulla Samal, former Minister Suresh Routray and Nayagarh MLA Arun Sahoo were present at the occasion.

Keshab used his head, elbow and knee to break the coconuts, getting full cheer and appreciation from the crowd present there. Limca Book of Record official VBR Murty was present to certify Keshab's feat.

The 38-year-old Keshab Swain hails from Dharakot in Ganjam district. He had won the Biju Patnaik Bravery Award for 2009 after saving pilgrims from a burning bus in 2008.

WITH three tiny books, a business man in Kunnamkulam has made his mark in the Limca Book of World Records.

Sathar Adhoor from Kunnamkulam is the first proud writer whose name has been entered in the Limca Book of Records for the smallest collection of poems and fiction.

Sathar has been working since 2008 in order to get into the Book. "The struggle to shape my thoughts into these tiny books is purely an act of determination to come up with a different way of writing," he says.

He believes that writing is highly competitive these days. So, it requires hard work to get into a slot.

The books are 101 SMS Stories (40mm x 25mm x 4mm), 101 SMS poems (30mmx25mmx4mm) and 50:50 (16mmx13mmx4mm). Each book has 100 pages in it. 50:50, made out of an A4 paper is a collection of poems and stories weighing two-and-half grams.

He used to write poems and send them to publications for years, but they never saw the light. But he remembers that his name and work had been criticised in some publications by mainstream writers.

A dedicated writer, he also runs a real estate business. But end of the day, he finds something to scribble on in his diary, which thoughts finally were transferred to the tiny books.

"Media have helped me a lot in getting into the record book," says Sathar. He had to send all the newspaper cuttings of his news published, to the authority to certify his book's authentication. Sathar's friend Fahad Kottol offered free printing of the books. And he sells his books free of cost.

Though he is not an established full time writer, he has won many awards for his writings. Akshara Kala Puraskaram, Deshiya Malayala Vedi Award, Anganam Katha Puraskaram and Herman Gundert Award 2009 are a few of them. Minaarangal is the only published novel in his account and he is on writing of another one. He had directed a 10-second long short film named The Man.

Sathar Adhoor always keeps off from mainstream writers but make experiments in his writings and now he is in a new venture to bring another shock to his readers.

SURAT: Breaking his past record of making largest Shivling using Rudraksha beads, Batuk Vyas got his name registered in Limca Book of Records once again by making 25-feet high Shivling. He had a record of making 15-feet Rudraksh Shivling to his credit which he created at Dharampur town in Valsad district.

Vyas has used 13,75,000 Rudraksha beads. The Shivling is 25-feet in height and 13-feet in width. Vyas is currently working to spread awareness about Rudraksha and has written books about the beads.

The certificate was awarded to him by Rajashok Shetty, observer for Limca Book of Records. Describing the Shivling, Shetty said, "Just looking at it is gives one a spiritual feeling."

What started out as a record for painting 100 paintings in 24 hour, Atmakuru Ramakrishna beat himself to it by finishing in thirteen hours, using only his fingertips.

He used oil and stretched canvases measuring 12x16 inches.

Ramakrishna is the proud holder of Limca Book of Records, Indian Book of Records, Global World Records and Wonder World Records. Ramakrishna is applying for Guinness Book of World Records as well.

Atmakuru Ramakrishna started painting right from his childhood and has won many prizes in his school days. With a Fine Arts degree and gold medallist from JNTU, Hyderabad, Ramakrishna has won many accolades. He says, “I pay attention to textures, after the colours, I think that it's the textures that do all the talking when it comes to paintings and works of art.” In all of his paintings, the mix of the skies and clouds is unique.

Ramakrishna says that it hardly takes him more than 20 minutes to finish an entire landscape painting on canvas— he is like a man with brushes instead of fingers.

This ‘finger-painter' started paintings such landscapes when he was making posters for literacy promotion, “Instead of using finger prints as a sign, get educated and use the finger prints to paint wonders…” he says.

The world's largest Indian flag weighing 250 kg was unfurled at the 'Vibrant India Festival' which began here today, showcasing the rich heritage and history of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

The 153-feet long tricolour, made by a tailor from Porbandar, Chhotalal S Shingdia, has found place in Limca Book of Records this year.

Indian-American Monty Saiyed, the organiser of the India festival, unfurled the flag in the festival at majestic Sears Center Arena here to showcase the cultural richness of India and as a symbol of peace and harmony.

During the two-day festival, there will be Rajasthani folk dance, Gujarat Garba, Raas and performances by Bollywood actors and singers.

After the event, the flag will be flown back to Navsari in Gujarat and would be used in other events in different Indian states.

Talking to reporters here, P M Sankaran, President fi teh Association, said the function would be held on November 10 to 14 and the cake would be displayed for the public to view on November 13 at Thalassery stadium.

Thalassery, well-known in bakery sector,has the distinction of making the first cake in the state in 1883.

The cake would have the history of Thalassery and cricket etched on it.

Cochin Bakery, which has entered the Limca Book of Records by setting a new India record for the heaviest icing on a single cake to a length of 216 ft, is preparing the proposed mega cake.

The Limca Book of Records Quiz, 2011 is open to all the students from class 8 to 12 who are above 12 years of age. The series has been classified into three stages:

Inter School Round
Each participating school may enter a maximum of 3 teams of 2 members each. A thirty minute written preliminary round would be administered to all the participating students. Only one team from each participating school can qualify for the stage round. The top 6 teams depending on their scores will qualify to participate in the finishing leg (stage round) of the City Finals. The team with the highest scores in the stage round would be declared as the 'City Winner' of Limca Book of Records Quiz, 2011.

Semi final Round

In the semifinal rounds, 'City Winners' would compete for the national finals. 80 teams to participate in the semifinals- Top 10 teams with a minimum of 2 teams from each zone out of a total of four zones and two top scorers from the semi-final rounds will be selected for the National Finals.

National Final
The top 10 teams from the Semifinal round will compete against each other in the National Final. Renowned quiz-master, Derek O'Brien to host the National Final.

Lightest newborn baby in the country - Rashi Rastogi enter Limca Book of Records

Her weight — 620 grams — at the time of birth, which was further reduced to 506 grams in five days, might have given nightmare to her parents, but it enabled Rashi Rastogi from Lucknow to get her name entered into the Limca Book of Records as the ''lightest newborn baby" in the country.

Rashi, who is now healthy, replaced Suryansh of Jaipur in Rajasthan, who weighed 684 grams at the time of his birth.

Rashi is one among the triplet delivered by  Alka Rastogi on April 30 last year. 

Though the male and the other female baby weighed 1,400 grams and 1,000 grams, respectively, both died a few days after developing complications.

Rashi had to be kept on life support for three weeks after her birth and thereafter remained at a hospital for over two months, the parents said.

“She looked like a little bird when she was born,” the doctors said. Rashi, however, gained weight during the period and by the time she was discharged from the hospital, she weighed 1,100 grams, they added.

Ameya Gupta set Limca Book of Record 2011

Ameya Gupta may be just six years old, but few can measure up to his prowess. For Ameya has his name in the Limca Book of Records because of his collection of 1,239 measuring sticks or rulers from 12 different countries. But many would say this is par for the course for his Vikaspuri-based family.

Ameya is studying in class I at Maharaja Agrasen Public School in Ashok Vihar.  His name was registered in Limca Book of Records around 15 days ago.

Ameya's aunt Anuradha Gupta (41) an accounts teacher, first brought glory to her family. She has collected 30,000 matchboxes of 77 countries. Her 16-year-old daughter Kanika Gupta has a stockpile of 5100 erasers from 15 different countries. The fourth member who has brought glory to the family is Anuradha's sister-in-law Priyanka who has 13,096 name slips from 12 different nations. All four people have had their names registered in the Limca Book of Records.

"I was impressed by the achievement of my sister-in-law and her daughter so I decided to do something like them. Anuradha helped me. I started collecting name slips," said Priyanka. "I faced a lot of problems initially. I asked my friends to help me as well. I also did online shopping of name slips to complete my collection," she added.  

Sharing her experience with MiD DAY, Anuradha said that she was studying in class IX when she started collecting matchboxes. "I liked matchboxes.  But I didn't know that collecting them could be a hobby. I never talked about this to anyone thinking they would ridicule me," she said.

Anuradha said that she wanted to go to cigarette kiosks to buy matchboxes but was apprehensive of people censuring her. She then started picking them up from the roadside. She was preparing for her B.Ed exams when she was praised for her hobby by her teacher.

"He was grading us on the basis of our hobbies. He called the whole staff and praised me. Then I joined Vanasthli Public School as an accounts teacher. The school authority conducted an exhibition of my collection. In 1993 my name was registered in Limca Book of Records," she said. 

Anuradha then helped her daughter Kanika, a class XII student, follow in her footsteps. The teenager confesses she likes erasers because of how they smell. Using her pocket money, which was around Rs. 800 initially, she started on her mission. Anuradha and her husband Praveen Gupta were enthused. "We used to take her to exhibitions at Pragati Maidan to purchase erasers of other countries. We asked our relatives who stay abroad to send her erasers as gift. Now she has 5100 of them from 15 different countries. Her name was registered in the Limca Book in 2003," said Anuradha.

Mohammed Dilawar Nashik based environmentalist enters Limca Book of Records

An environmentalist working to save the common house sparrows has entered the Limca Book of Records while a project coordinated by him, Save Our Sparrows (SOS), has been accorded the honour in the Guinness World Records.

Mohammed Dilawar, the Nashik-based environmentalist, had launched an international crusade to save the humble sparrows.

"Our SOS project, implemented worldwide in collaboration with Mumbai's Burhani Foundation, has been recognised by the Guinness World Records," an excited Dilawar told IANS here Thursday.

The SOS project was carried out by Burhani Foundation four months ago to mark the World Sparrow Day March 20 and the 100th birthday (celebrated March 25) of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the spiritual head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, Dilawar said.

To mark the momentous occasion, the Burhani Foundation distributed 52,000 bird-feeders around the world.

The bird-feeders were handed over to individuals, NGOs and environmental organisations for the cause of the house sparrow, currently facing a major threat from human developmental activities.

"These activities have been recognised by the Guinness and Limca and will serve as a major boost to the campaign to save our sparrows," Dilawar said.

The Guinness citation says: "The largest distribution of bird-feeders was undertaken by Burhani Foundation (India) to celebrate His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin's (Spiritual head of Dawoodi Bohra community) centenary birth celebrations."

Similarly, the Limca citation reads: "As the world celebrated World Sparrow Day, Indian Postal Department released a stamp of the house sparrow along with the rock pigeon on March 20, 2010. Nashik-based Mohammed Dilawar, who initiated the movement in India, was in the forefront of the activities in Delhi."

Narayanan Menon has entered the the Limca Book of Records for managing to drive his stock Tata Indigo Manza for 46.33 Kilometers on a single liter of diesel

This is one record attempt that had been done ages ago but has finally received the due recognition that it originally deserved after so long. Nevertheless, it is quite refreshing to see a record breaking attempt being finally recognized by the car maker. Tata Manza owner, Mr. Narayanan Menon has entered the the Limca Book of Records for managing to drive his stock Manza for 46.33 Kilometers on a single liter of diesel.

By the looks of it, this is the highest ever mileage that the 1.3 Liter Fiat Multijet diesel engine has clocked across the world and that makes this record even more special. The record has been completed on a stock Tata Manza Diesel with absolutely no modifications for the mileage run. Mr Menon drove the Tata Manza on the arrow straight bye-pass road between Coimbatore and Avanashi, and covered a distance of 72.3 kilometer using only 1.58 liters of diesel translating into a mileage of 46.33 KMPL of Diesel.

The record was certified by the Limca Book of Record on the 25th of May, 2010. Mr Narayanan attributes this high mileage figure to disciplined driving with a light right foot rather than any special skills. Also, regular maintenance of the car is said to be a major factor for the good mileage figure. So, if Mr Narayanan can squeeze these many kilometers from a stock Manza on a good stretch of tarmac, so can you.

While Mr Narayanan’s record was for a short distance, stock Tata Manza’s driven with a light foot can deliver over 20 kilometers per liter of diesel on Indian highways with the mileage figure in the city going up to almost 15-16 KMPL. So, it indeed pays to have good driving habits and maintaining your car in top shape. Meanwhile, the Tata Motors has managed to sell 4,00,000 sedans so far, which in itself is no mean feat for a young car maker like Tata.

Longest service as personal assistant to minister set Limca Book of Record by Arun Buch

Arun Buch, a 75-year-old resident of Gandhinagar, has achieved a unique distinction. He has been listed in the Limca Book of Records for “completing the longest service as personal assistant to minister”.

The certificate, signed by Limca book editor Vijay Ghosh, states: “Buch of Gandhinagar who joined the government service in 1958 completed the longest service as personal assistant to minister, having served 35 years as PA to six different ministers in Gujarat government before retirement in 1995. He had been appointed PA to a minister in the very first government of the state on May 26, 1960.”

Buch, who was born in Rajkot, lives in Gandhinagar with his wife Jyostana, a retired government employee. His daughter Chetna is married to a Gandhinagar resident.

He began his service in the Directorate of Ayurveda on April 4, 1958. “Following an interview, I was chosen to work in the Chief Minister’s Office. However, I decided to join as PA to minister Bahadur Patel. I worked with seven ministers, all of whom had a down-to-earth approach. They would visit remote areas of the state and interact with the poor,” said the 75-year-old.

About Bahadur Patel, he recollected: “When Patel’s term ended, he had no money for the fare to return to his native place. His friends gave him the Rs 110 he needed to reach Kareliya village in Vansda taluka. He built a hut on his farm and stayed there. Patel, who was a minister for 11 years, had returned to Kareliya because he did not have the money (Rs 3,800) to contest polls.”

About minister Parmanand Ojha, he revealed, “Ojha was from Una taluka in Junagadh. A lot of villagers would visit his bungalow. Instead of dipping into the state coffers, as many politicians do, Ojha sold off 2 acres of his farmland so that he could take care of his guests.” Buch added, “The ministers cared for their people. During the 1982 floods in Ahmedabad, the railway station was flooded. Amarsinh Chaudhary — the then irrigation minister — waded through the water, spoke to residents and got them moved to safety. This decision saved the lives of 600 people.”

“Today, most ministers talk only to industrialists not the common people. This is a difference seen in Gujarat as it enters its 51st year,” he said.

Sufyan Shaikh, the master swimmer from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, has set the Limca Book of the bathing spot for nine of the sea around the world.

"Limca Book of Records has been confirmed by a certificate that I have been involved in India as the first person to swim in nine different oceans around the world", 18, Shaikh said.

"Speaking of nine of the sea must be a question in your mind as you swim in this self-made. No place to swim around in international competitions, which are arranged in a special event at sea."

"And if there are competitions in the sea, in this case there are some associations that organize the crossing of the sea, taking the price for it. For example, the CS & PF to swim the English Channel, he said.

"I took seven races and two borders around the world in different sea areas. I sent my certificates of Limca Book of Records, after which they controlled, and my name on the bill of lading," he said.


Twenty year-old Indian swimmer Sufyan Mohsin Sheikh practices at The Rajpath Club swimming pool in Ahmedabad, Sheikh is set to become the youngest recipient of the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure award, which was announced by the Indian Sport Ministry on August 11.

Supreme Court Advocate Radhakanta Tripathy enters Limca Book of Records

NEW DELHI: An Advocate of the Supreme Court, Radhakanta Tripathy, has created a national record and entered the Limca Book of Records 2011 edition for filing the maximum number of petitions yet in a single day.

Tripathy filed 703 petitions with two national commissions in a single day. On November 17, 2009, he submitted 409 petitions with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and 294 petitions with National Commission for Scheduled Caste (NCSC).

The petitions were to draw the attention of both the commissions towards the human rights violations like forceful displacement of over 20,000 families from their homes and large scale felling of trees for the river canal Sanskar projects in Bhadrak district of Orissa.

Both the commissions took cognizance of the petitions and initiated action upon them for the great relief of thousands of aggrieved people.

The Limca Book of Records honoured Tripathy with a certificate for the commendable feat that brought him this coveted national record.

Tripathy has been practicing at the apex court since 2003 and filed a number of petitions and public interest litigations in the Supreme Court, in the High Courts of Delhi and Orissa and at all the national commissions, including the National Commission for Women, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes and finally, the National Commission for Minorities.

He even moved the Election Commission, bringing to their notice that young children were being used to carry the ballot boxes, EVM machines etc.

On this, the poll panel had issued notices to all the Chief Secretaries and Chief Electoral Officers in the country.

Tripathy also filed hundreds of RTI applications seeking information on a variety of controversial subjects and was instrumental in getting filled the vacancies in the national commissions which were in limbo, on the directions of the apex court.
