Most people doing jumping jacks in a day sets World Record

Michelle Obama has earned her family another place in history. This time, Mrs Obama will share the honor with more than 300,000 other participants on Sunday who set the record for most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period.

The previous world record was just 20,000.

In a video from the White House, Mrs Obama thanked National Geographic Kids and the Guinness Book of World Records, who helped organize the event as part of Obama's Let's Move! initiative to promote physical fitness and healthy eating for children. She also said she hopes that physical fitness will be a priority for the kids who participated.

"More than anything, I want to say, thanks to every single young person who showed that exercise isn't just good for you, but that it's fun too," Mrs Obama said.

A jumping jack is a physical jumping exercise performed by jumping to a position with the legs spread wide and the hands touching overhead and then returning to a position with the feet together and the arms at the sides. The jumping jack name comes from the traditional toy of the same name.

Boys & Girls Club seeks jumping jack Guinness World Record

The clock hit 6:30p and Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide simultaneously hopped-to.

At the Red Bank chapter, on Drs. James Parker Boulevard, unit director Shniece Perry was slightly tentative.

About a dozen of the club’s members had just finished practicing a timed run of jumping jacks, readying for the early evening attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the most people doing simultaneous jumping jacks across multiple venues.

“They just did a little practice run to see how long two minutes is,” Perry said. “We hope that they last.”

In the one that counted, one girl called uncle with about 30 seconds to go, while the rest kept with the clock in hopes of breaking the record.

It’s yet to be seen whether the national organization will make it into the books. Perry took a roll of all who participated and will submit the information to the Boys and Girls Club.

The two minutes flew by with a little motivation from Perry and club employee Aaron Styles, who put out the rallying cry, “jumping jacks, jumping jacks, who can do jumping jacks?”

“Me, me, me, me,” the kids responded.

Then time was up, and the kids went limp and exhaled.

“That shows you’ve got what it takes to be healthy and stay on top,” Styles said. “Remember this: you be great.”

A new Guinness World Record has been completed for bungee jumping. Bungee jumping has become a common recreation and is normally associated under the heading as a rush sport or an adrenalin sport, which basically means a sport that will get your pulse rate pumping to its limits.

James Field broke the world record of 19 jumps in one hour by performing a staggering 42 jumps in the allotted sixty minutes. Field completed the record yesterday in London close to Tower Bridge.

Health and safety was the number one priority for the world record attempt. After each and every jump the bungee rope was replaced with a new one and there were several assistants that checked and double checked all the equipment.

Field said that he felt a little bit dizzy after completing the new record. This is no surprise as he jumped from a platform 50 meters from the ground. He said that he had to concentrate his mind on the task as he threw himself of the platform, the task was made more challenging due to the windy weather.

He then went on to say that it was harder then he had expected and it required him to get into a rhythm and control his breathing. He also said that he thought that he had done his quota of jumps for the remainder of the year. So don’t expect to see him throwing himself from any other tall structures for some time to come.

A world record-holding New Zealand skydiver has jumped from a plane near Mt Everest to promote adventure sports in the Himalayas.

Wendy Smith jumped from a plane at a height of 8992m on Monday, The Dominion Post reported today.
Smith has made more than 18,000 skydives, and in October landed next to Mt Everest Base Camp, 5240m above sea level.

Smith has broken world records for speed skydiving, and won Emmy Awards for her work as a cinematographer, filming formations of hundreds of skydivers in remote locations.
Smith was one of the world's most experienced woman skydivers, Sky Dive Lake Wanaka chief safety officer Dave Hall said.
Jumpers at such heights faced risks including frostbite and losing consciousness, despite carrying oxygen tanks, he said.

Calif school Kids jump at chance to help set world record

Hundreds of children spread out Monday around McAuliffe School in Oxnard, jumping and skipping to try to set a world record and raise awareness about heart health.

They joined about 80,000 people statewide who started jumping at 9 a.m., trying to break the Guinness World Record for the most people jumping rope at the same time, said McAuliffe Learning Director Manny Koch. Monday was the first day of American Heart Month, and the event was organized in partnership with the American Heart Association, officials said.

“Who here is ready to make history?” Koch yelled into a microphone seconds before the jumping began. Kids cheered and screamed in response, and for the next 10 minutes as music blared from speakers, kindergartners through sixth-graders swung their ropes, laughing, sweating and getting a little winded.

California schools, nonprofit groups, businesses and clubs all worked with the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance on the attempt, Koch said. The current jump-rope record is 59,000 people and is held by Australia. Officials were not sure if and when Monday’s effort would be certified as a new record.

McAuliffe and Parkview School in Port Hueneme were the two Ventura County campuses participating in the statewide effort. The Environmental Academy for Research Technology and Earth Sciences, or EARTHS, a magnet school in Newbury Park, also jumped and raised money Monday but did not register for the record-breaking challenge.

At EARTHS, the event had a special meaning for kids and staff, said Lisa Dellamonica, a physical education teacher and event coordinator. In January, the campus unexpectedly lost fifth-grade teacher Rose McManama to a heart attack. “We wanted to do this in her honor,” Dellamonica said.

The school’s 500 kindergarteners through fifth-graders participated in the event, and the campus raised more than $2,000 for the American Heart Association.

“The mission of this program is really just to educate our youth on how they can make a difference in other people’s lives and their lives through healthy eating and exercise and giving back to our organization,” said Jessica LaRoe, youth market director for the association.

McAuliffe was the largest of the county schools participating Monday, with about 1,000 kids jumping, LaRoe said.

“It was really hard because you had to keep going and not stop for more than 10 seconds,” said Jessica Grogg, 11, after the music stopped. “It gets pretty tiring.”

World record in jump-roping set by Californians

Around California at 9 a.m. on Monday, the sound of more than 80,000 jump ropes swinging at once will be heard.

The California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, in association with the American Heart Association and the Governor’s Challenge, is hosting 84,000 people across California to break the Guinness World Record for most people jump roping at the same time on Feb. 1.

“[CAHPERD] is turning 80 years old this year, so we’re turning it up this year” said CAHPERD Executive Director Drisha Leggitt, who initiated the project.

About a year ago, Leggitt began looking for a way to make a statement for exercise in California and found the Guinness Book of World Records’ official record for most people to jump rope at one time was 59,000, set by Australia in May, 2008.

“We started talking with CAHPERD in December, looking how we could be part of this great event,” Pittman said. “Kathy Weninger, a member of the PTSA, and the physical education department head, Debi Hayos have been working together to make sure all of our first period PE classes can participate.”

“I got an e-mail last fall from CAHPERD and they sent it out to all the jump rope teams in the area,” said Weninger, who’s also the coordinator for one of the local competitive jump rope teams, the Foothill Force.

Weninger then spoke about it at a PTSA meeting and the rest is history.

In addition to the school’s supply of jump ropes, the PTSA donated more than 70 to the cause, Pittman added. Teachers with first period open have been encouraged to participate and Pittman plans on doing some rope skipping herself.

“I’m very excited for this,” Pittman said. “I’m bringing my own jump rope. We sent e-mails to the PTSA parents asking them if they would like to join.”

The coordination efforts have been difficult, Leggitt said, but that the majority of the work has been in getting the agreed upon judges and meeting the standards of the Guinness Record keepers.

“They really make you jump through some hoops,” Leggitt said. “They receive about 3,000 requests a day and so now it’s very difficult to get a recognized attempt.”

The rules state that in order for the attempt to be recognized, two independent witnesses per jump rope site—volunteers who can’t be employed by the school or whatever company is hosting the competition at a given site.

Each site will have a log sheet. Participants will sign in and the judge will verify that each person who signs in is who they say they are.

Then the Guinness Book agency needs two letters from each site—one per judge—explaining what took place during the record-breaking event.
