Largest ever keyboard ensemble in the world - 136 keyboards play in unison

Largest ever keyboard ensemble in the world  - 136 keyboards play in unison

The youngest is only six and the oldest, 17 , but these children have already won worldwide recognition.

They are on a team of 136 young keyboard artistes of the School of Music, Thrissur which recently won a place both in Guinness World Records and the Limca Book of Records for a performance by the largest ever keyboard ensemble in the world.

The event, held at the Trichur Tennis Trust on November 20, 2011, was conceptualised by the School’s managing director, Raju K.K.

The idea for the world record attempt came about during discussions with parents and students about ways to increase participation in musical events.

“At first, the attempt at the record was a joke but then we decided to go about it seriously,” explains Mr Raju, who spent over six months teaching his students a medley of songs from around the world to attempt it.

The pieces of music played on the occasion included the 2010 football World Cup theme song ‘Waka waka’ and evergreen numbers from the Bollywood hit ‘Sholay.’

As Limca required the band to play before its panel of judges as well as the public, the challenge was even greater “We were more concerned about getting an opportunity to share our music with people from around the world, than even beating the earlier record of 107 keyboards held by an American team,” Mr Raju adds.

Most ambitious tour ever - The Melvins' Buzz Osborne Tour Dates

Most ambitious tour ever - The Melvins' Buzz Osborne Tour Dates

Seminal grunge rockers The Melvins have been playing music for 29 years, and founding member and frontman Buzz Osborne is pushing 50. That isn’t stopping them from embarking on one of the most ambitious tours one can imagine. In fact, when they hit the road this fall, they’ll be going after the world record for the most ambitious tour ever, at least in the United States. Beginning with a Sept. 5 show in Anchorage, Alaska, the Melvins will attempt to play 51 shows in 51 days, with each show taking place in a different state and one in Washington D.C.

“I honestly don’t think it’s going to be that hard,” said Osborne. “But we have to do it, that’s the thing. It’s a lot of shows in a row. It’s a lot of people to count on. We’re not getting any younger. You’ve got to do this stuff while you can still put one foot in front of the other.”

After an initial claim that The Melvins would attempt the entire tour on Harleys, Osborne admitted that they would indeed be traveling by van, with the exception of the dates in Alaska and Hawaii.

“We’re driving,” Osborne said. “It’d be easy for Morrissey to get in his private jet and do it. If that was the case we would do four states a day.”

The tour will be part of a busy year for the Melvins. On Tuesday, they released Freak Puke, an album recorded by a variation of the group called Melvins Lite that consists of Osborne, long-standing drummer Dale Crover, and upright bassist Trevor Dunn. The album is a departure from what most have come to expect from the Melvins, relying heavily on an experimental, free-flowing, jazz-like sound that comes largely as a result of Dunn’s prowess on the upright bass. “The only strings on the record are the stand-up bass,” said Osborne. “Technically they’re strings, but he got all of those string [sounds] out of a stand-up double bass. There’s no amp, just a mic-ed, acoustic, stand up double bass. Trevor’s amazing. He’s a tremendous musician.”

Arjun Sunil Kumar play the pitch-pipe organ continuously for 48 hours set Guinness Record

Arjun Sunil Kumar will attempt to play the pitch-pipe organ continuously for 48 hours to get his name featured in the Guinness Book of World Records.

If everything goes well, Arjun Sunil Kumar will find his way into the Guinness Book of World Records in a few months. This 14-year-old from Kozhikode is planning to set the world record by playing the pitch-pipe organ continuously for 48 hours.

Royal instrument

Pitch-pipe organ is a musical instrument made using metal pipes of various sizes, and arranged in such a way that each pipe gives a different sound. More than 50 pipes made in copper, brass and other metals are used in it. The instrument was very popular in France, Germany and Australia during the royal era. It is still popular in some parts of North India. Harindra Prasad Varma of Secunderabad, Narayan Naidu of Goa, Saidas Bhat and Ustad Ali Mohammed of Mangalore are some of the well known pitch-pipe players in India. Pitch-pipe organ suits all types of music whether it is Hindustani, Carnatic or Western.

The aspirant

Arjun, a Std IX student of S.N. College High School, Chelannur, has been learning music for more than six years. He is proficient in tabla and keyboard. He got interested in pitch-pipe after watching it in television once. His music teacher Radhakrishnan from Kozhikode, who has learned the instrument from Ustad Ali Mohammed, was also an influence.

Arjun gave his debut performance (Arangettam) at Sree Renuka Mariyamman Kovil in Tali on October 13, as a part of the Navarathri musical fiesta. He was accompanied by 17 of his friends on various musical instruments. He is now awaiting a reply from the Guinness Book of World Record authorities regarding his proposition. The feat is expected to take place in January next year. More than 160 children from all parts of the district are expected to accompany Arjun on various musical instruments.

Arjun's father Sunil Kumar runs a two-wheeler workshop in Kozhikode's famous S.M. Street while his mother Lathika is a housewife.
