A saltwater crocodile weighing more than a ton and suspected of killing two people in the Philippines has been declared the largest such reptile in captivity by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The 6.17-meter male, nicknamed “Lolong,” was captured in the Agusan marsh on the southern island of Mindanao last September after a two-year search following the killing of a girl and the disappearance of a fisherman.

“The largest crocodile in captivity is Lolong, a saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), who measured 6.17 m,” Guinness said. “Lolong’s weight was also measured at a truck weigh-bridge and verified as 1,075 kg.”
Welinda Asis Elorde, media affairs coordinator for the town of Bunawan, which has custody of the new record-holder, said yesterday the local government had received an official certification from Guinness. “He’s doing well. I think he has already adapted to his new environment,” Elorde told AFP.

At first, Lolong was fed the equivalent of 10 percent of his body weight in beef and poultry every month, but an expert put him on a diet of eight to 10 kg a week to get him to be more active, she added.

The expert also recommended that the meat be given with skin and feathers attached, to help digestion.

“I was there (at the crocodile park where Lolong is kept) yesterday and he remains a big tourist attraction. Hundreds of people visit him in a day,” Elorde said. The Guinness record was previously held by Cassius, a 5.48-meter Australian crocodile weighing close to a ton.

Longest line of coins set Guinness World Record by Philippines

Philippine civic groups and charities lined up almost 73 kilometers (45 miles) of coins on Wednesday in a bid to set a new Guinness World Record and build schools for the poor.

The project, which aimed to set a new record for the longest line of single-denomination coins, received a better response than anticipated with families thronging Manila’s Quirino Grandstand to donate their coins.

While it will take time to get the official certification from Guinness World Records, organizer Paul Chan said the Philippines had clearly toppled the old record of 64.88 kilometers of pennies set in Fort Scott, Kansas in 2008.

“Unofficially, we have received nearly 73 kilometers of coins already but we cannot state that officially unless a geodetic engineer and an architect certifies it,” as required by Guinness, said Chan.

Businesses, universities and private groups all contributed nearly 3.6 million 25-centavo denomination coins, amounting to about 912,000 pesos ($21,000), which will be used to build schools.

The project, supported by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, is also intended to bring more coins into circulation to ease a shortage of loose change affecting many businesses, organizers said.

MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos have another reason to be proud as the country’s own Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) made world history by setting a new Guinness World Records feat last January 31.

In a gathering of more than 2,000 guests, Maynilad employees rocked the SMX Convention Center by using water pipes to play out a rhythm of beats in unison, which earned them the record of “Largest Pipe Drum Ensemble”. London-based Guinness World Record adjudicator Kimberley Dennis witnessed the event.

The record-setting victory was among the highlights of Maynilad’s 2011 Customer Service Rally graced by the company’s Board of Directors headed by Maynilad Chairman Mr. Manny V. Pangilinan and Board Member Mr. Jorge A. Consunji, together with Maynilad’s top leaders led by Mr. Ricky P. Vargas, President and Mr. Herbert M. Consunji, Chief Operating Officer.

Mr. Vargas congratulated and encouraged everyone to continue to move together as one team as they bring safe, reliable, and affordable water to Filipino families. “We can do all of these if we have the correct mindset,” Vargas said. “We have to continue to put our customers first.”

According to Mr. Chris Lichauco, Head of Business Operations, the Guinness record that Maynilad has set was symbolic of how everyone’s participation, hard work, and dedication are key in achieving a common goal. “The last three years has been all about breaking records for Maynilad. This year is the most ambitious yet,” Lichauco added, as he shared the company’s various plans to further improve its services, such as infrastructure, service area expansion and customer service, among others.

Special guest and famed motivator Bo Sanchez also shared a few moving words that both inspired and delighted Maynilad employees while celebrity Ryan Agoncillo fired up the crowd with his hosting skills.
