London Olympics World Record 2012 - Legally blind archer sets world record

London Olympics World Record 2012 - Legally blind archer sets world record

Legally blind archer Im Dong-Hyun set the first world record of the London Olympics on Friday and then added another as South Korea broke the team record.

In the men's preliminary round, held at the Lord's cricket ground, Im scored 699 points from 72 arrows to beat his own record of 696 set in May this year.

Along with Kim Bubmin and Oh Jin-Hyek he also helped register a 216-arrow total of 2,087 -- smashing the world record also set in Turkey in May by 18 points.

The 26-year-old Im from Chungbuk is legally blind in his left eye with 20/200 vision. That means he needs to be 10 times closer to see an object than someone with perfect 20/20 vision. His right eye has 20/100 vision.

He won team gold at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics to add to his four world titles and four Asian Games gold medals.

Despite his records, Im wasn't getting carried away, preferring to concentrate on the push for a gold medal when the competition resumes on Saturday.

"This is just the first round so I will not get too excited by it," he said.

South Korea coach Jang Young-Sool also warned his team against complacency ahead of the medals clash.

"We will have a day of rest now and prepare for tomorrow," said Jang.

Jang's fellow coach Oh Seon-Tek praised the performance of Kim Bubmin who had struggled in practice, but rasied his game on Friday.

London's Olympic 2012 - British wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft set world record

London's Olympic 2012 - British wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft set world record

London's Olympic Stadium witnessed its first world record on Tuesday when British wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft set a new mark in the T34 category for 100 metres.

Competing at a Paralympic test event just days after the official opening of the 80,000-seat venue, the 19-year-old world champion stopped the clock at 18.56 seconds.

Ireland's Michael McKillop then became the first male to set a world record on the track when he slashed 15 seconfs off his own record in the T37 category 1,500.

"Incredible is the word," Cockroft told the BBC.

"I didn't come here expecting anything amazing at all. I had no idea I was near world record pace."

Her day did not go entirely to plan, however, as she suffered some transport problems arriving at the east London Olympic Park and had to jump in a taxi.

"The morning was really stressful, the coach broke down and then they wouldn't let the taxis in," she said.

"I missed the warmup and had to just get my numbers on and go straight onto the track. It was the worst preparation I'd ever had before a race."

Ireland's McKillop, a gold medallist in Beijing, played down his achievement.

"It's nice to be here and breaking a world record. Being the first male to do it in this stadium is quite a nice thought," he said after finishing in 3:59.54.

"It's only a 400 track with lots of seats around it basically, so it's similar to where I train which is also a 400m track. I've just got to get used to it."

The stadium, the heart of the London Olympics, has been hosting test events since last Friday when the British Universities and Colleges outdoor championships took place.

World’s biggest McDonald’s - Biggest McDonald's in the world

World’s biggest McDonald’s - Biggest McDonald's in the world

The world’s biggest McDonald’s will be built in London for the upcoming Olympic Games 2012. The 3,000 sqm monster fast food joint will be in East London, near the Olympic Village but will not be permanent, with plans to take it down after the Olympics.

The biggest McDonald's restaurant in the world will open for six weeks during the London 2012 Olympic games with plans to serve more than 50,000 Big Mac burgers and 180,000 orders of french fries.

The huge temporary branch will have seating for 1,500 customers and will employ more than 2,000 staff.

While the world's top athletes compete at the Olympics and Paralymics from July 27 to September 9 three million people are expected to visit the McDonald's branch. The nearly ten-thousand square feet restaurant built from recyclable materials will stretch over two floors and is equivalent to half the length of an American football field.

The 12,000 people who applied to work at the huge branch and three others planned for the Olympic site have been put through X Factor style auditions across the country.

They were judged on politeness and how well they flipped burgers, served ice cream and cooked the French fries.

McDonald's began its involvement with the Olympics in 1968 when the company airlifted hamburgers to U.S. athletes competing in Grenoble, France. The firm first became an official sponsor at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and in 1984 McDonald's footed the bill for the Olympic swimming stadium in Los Angeles.

The London Olympics will be the ninth games where McDonald's has acted as the event's official restaurant and the only branded food retailer feeding the athletes.

Ingredients for the McDonald's menu at London 2012 will be sourced from 17,500 British and Irish farms. The fast-food giant also plans to give away nine million activity toys with its Happy Meals during the games as part of its 'Mascotathon' campaign.
