Sibu breaks Guinness world record with longest graffiti scroll
SIBU: About 500 youths painted a 1.6km-long graffiti to place Sibu in the Guinness Book of World Records — the first ever for the district.
Lanang MP and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King described the momentous event as history in-the-making for the local populace. Guinness World Records adjudicator Seyda Subasi-Gemici from Turkey was present to ensure everything went smoothly and the rules for the attempt were followed.
“My job is to record the attempt, and verify that the whole attempt took place according to the guidelines of Guinness World Records,” Seyda said.
The guidelines among others specified that the height of the canvas needed to be at least 1.5 metres.
“And there should be no gaps in the canvas. My final duty is to measure the canvas to confirm it is longer than the one in Brazil. If it exceeds the past record’s length, there will be a new record holder and the information is entered into the Guinness World Records database. A certificate will also be issued,” she added.
The event was held in conjunction with the Millennium Development Goals Awareness Campaign, co-hosted by JCI Malaysia and JCI Mandarin Sibu, and sponsored by Kolej Laila Taib (KLT) and saw hundreds of young people from schools, NGOs, and others painting their way into the Guinness World Records – Longest Graffiti Scroll – as early as 7am yesterday
“This marks a new era for Sibu as 500 youths create history, coming up with a 1.6km long graffiti to achieve a new World Guinness Record for the longest graffiti scroll.
“This is indeed a significant occasion for the people of Sibu as we show the world that Sibu ‘boleh’ and our young people ‘boleh’.
“With this achievement the world will come to know about Sibu and how dynamic its young people are,” Tiong said at the opening ceremony held at an open space next to KLT.
“Let this be the start of more good things to come and we hope others will follow suit to break more records to make Sibu better known to the world community.”
He praised the youths for their courage in taking up such challenge and elevating the town image.
The current record was set in Mar 7 this year in Brazil where 246 people painted a 1.4km-long graffiti, breaking an earlier record set in Mexico.
The usually quiet open space near KLT was turned into a hive of human activities, filled with laughter as people from all walks of life sprayed their dreams on to the 1.6km-long canvas that snaked around the grounds.
It was a sight indeed to see design and creativity begin to manifests itself on the canvas, measuring 1.5 meter in height.
