The floor was shaking at the new Ravenscraig sports centre when over 800 keep-fit fanatics smashed a world record on Sunday.
Thousands of people visited the state-of-the-art complex over its opening weekend and the highlight was the world’s biggest Zumba class.
No fewer than 836 people danced their way into the record books, smashing the previous record of a Canadian university by almost 300 participants.
Melanie Menzies, Health and Fitness Manager with North Lanarkshire Leisure, who organised the event, said: “The whole place was absolutely buzzing.”
The event was attended by two independent adjudicators and now awaits official verification from the Guinness Book of Records to confirm that the world record has been broken.
Zumba is a cross between aerobics and Latin dance. It fuses hypnotic rhythms and easy-to-follow moves in a fun environment.
Blane Dodds, Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure, added: “We’re thrilled and delighted to have marked the opening of this fabulous new facility by breaking a world record. We’re now hoping to break the world record for the biggest fitness class ever.”
Events at Ravenscraig continue during the October school break. There will be a family fun day on October 14 (1-5pm).
