A group of Moroccans sought to claim the record Saturday for the world’s largest flag by displaying a 60,000 square metre (645,835 square foot) version of their country’s standard.
A representative of The Guinness Book of World Records was present to verify if the 20 tonne flag of a green star on a red background did indeed set a new world record, said one of the organisers, Mehdi Bensaid. The event also had political overtones, as the flag was displayed in the largest city in southern part of Western Sahara, a region Morocco annexed in 1975 and which is still the subject of UN talks. afp
