The Sena’s diktat is clear. It wants to collect 25,000 bottles of blood on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Maharashtra and walk into the Guinness Book of World Records.
The previous record was set by Dera Sacha Sauda of Sri Ganga Nagar in Punjab, which collected blood from 17,921 donors in 2004.
Under the party’s plan, each of its 227 unit chiefs needs to bring at least 200 donors from their respective areas to achieve the target. Blood would be collected at a camp in Goregaon on April 25. A brainchild of the party’s executive president Uddhav Thackeray, the camp is aimed at building connect with people in constructive ways.
The grand idea has left the unit chiefs at their wit’s end. They may lose their posts if they fail to muster people for the camp. “I can easily bring 200 people for a rally at Shivaji Park, but it is much more difficult to gather that many people to donate blood,” a unit chief said.
To make their task more difficult, they already collected blood in their areas on January 23, party chief Bal Thackeray’s 83rd birthday.
“Normally, a donor can donate blood once in three months. The unit chiefs will have to run from pillar to post to gather 200 new people,” he added.
The performance of unit chiefs has been under the party’s scanner after it launched a drive to reshuffle the organisation a few months ago. “I fear party seniors will use the camp as an opportunity to clip our wings,” another unit chief said. They have started poster campaigns in their areas to find donors.
