Longest Ice Cream Dessert set Guinness World Record by Webster University.

On Wednesday, April 11, Webster University (470 East Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves; 314-968-7128) broke the Guinness World Record for the "Longest Ice Cream Dessert." You might not have known there was a record to break, but up until Wednesday, the record was 152.2 feet. Webster blew that sad little junior sundae out of the water with its 200.3 foot ice cream sundae, which was built on the university's quad.

This epic and delicious event was the kick-off to Webster's annual Spring Fest. Gut Check spoke with campus activities program manager, Lauren Douglass, to get the full scoop on how this record-breaking event came to be.

Douglass explained that Webster's campus activities group booked the band Reel Big Fish for its annual spring concert, so the theme for the week became: "It's big. Reel Big." When brainstorming ideas for ways to jump start Spring Fest, they figured -- what's bigger than breaking a world record?

The campus activities group at Webster has made giant sundaes in the past, so they weren't strangers to the world of over-sized desserts, but this was definitely the largest attempted in the college's history.

Set-up for the sugarcoated event began at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, and construction of the colossal sundae began at noon. With more than 80 volunteers scooping and sprinkling away, the record was broken in less than 30 minutes. Minnick's Surveying provided the official measurement of 200.3 feet and served as official witnesses alongside Hannah Ingram of the Opera Theatre of St. Louis.

The record-breaking sundae included 456 pounds of vanilla ice cream, eight pounds of cherries and fourteen pounds of rainbow sprinkles. The epic sundae lasted only long enough to get the official measurement -- once the announcement was made, students, staff and Gut Check swarmed the Slip 'n Slide-shaped dessert with spoons and bowls in hand. Our conclusion? Breaking records never tasted so good.

World's largest ice cream cake Guinness World Record by Dairy Queen

Hundreds of people turned out today in Toronto to witness the construction of the world's largest ice cream cake.

Guinness World Records was on hand at Dundas Square as the 10,130.35-kilogram cake was created.

A forklift brought pallets of vanilla ice cream into the square as 22 workers from Dairy Queen built and iced the cake.

The cake was solid ice cream in the centre, with 90 kilograms of sponge cake on the outside and 136 kilograms of icing and crushed Oreos on top.

The previous record was an 8,000-kilogram cake in Beijing, a record that stood for five years.

Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke shared a few spoonfuls of the cake with 12-year-old Madison Blenkinsop, a patient ambassador from Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children who declared the cake yummy.

Canadian curler Cheryl Bernard says she had two helpings of the cake at the charity event which also marked the 30th anniversary of Dairy Queen's ice cream.

Google Doodle Celebrates 119th Anniversary of First Ice Cream - World's most expensive ice cream

Google's homepage doodles are getting a tad random, but delicious. Today's image honors the 119th birthday of the first documented ice cream sundae.

The pastel-colored image replaces the two Os in the Google logo with a cherry-topped ice cream sundae.

The history of the ice cream sundae has actually spawned quite the rivalry between two U.S. cities that claim to be its birthplace – Ithaca, N.Y. and Two Rivers, Wisconsin – and Google appears to be siding with Ithaca.

On April 3, 1892, the Rev. John M. Scott visited the Platt & Colt Pharmacy – and its owner Chester Platt – in Ithaca after services at the Unitarian Church. Platt served up two bowls of vanilla ice cream, but decided to jazz it up with cherry syrup and candied cherry, according to What's Cooking America. The duo were so pleased with the creation that Scott suggested it be named after the day it was created, and the "Cherry Sunday" was upon us.

WOULD you spare RM1000 to eat a small dessert? The point is, are there such desserts that cost US$1,000 (RM3,042)? Well, with five scoops of high quality Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream infused with Madagascar’s vanilla ice cream creates a fine indulgence of US$1,000 the Grand Opulence Sundae.

It was recently nominated the World’s Most Expensive Ice Cream. The Grand Opulence Sundae isn’t served casually, but it is canopied in a 23K edible gold leaf and drizzled with Amedei Porceleana. The Amedei Porceleana is covered with chunks of rare Chuao chocolate. Later on, the ice cream is wrapped once again with exotic candied fruits all the way from Paris-gold dragnets, truffles and the famous Marzipan Cherries. To sweeten the ice cream, fresh passion fruit, orange and Armagnac (a kind of Brazil wine) are added. Finally, the ice cream is topped with a tiny bowl of Grand Passion Caviar, famously known for its gold sparkles. It’s worth the US$1,000 price tag for the heavenly taste!

The story goes this way… "One Sunday afternoon, John M. Scott, a Unitarian Church minister had his usual meeting with the co-owner of Platt & Colt Pharmacy, Chester C. Platt, who also happens to be the church’s treasurer.

They wanted to have an ice cream, but instead of the plain Vanilla, Platt covered the ice cream with cherry syrup and candied cherries. It tasted so delicious that they immediately named it the Cherry Sunday."

The oldest-known written evidence of a sundae is Platt & Colt’s newspaper ad for an Ice Cream specialty "Cherry Sunday," as seen in the Ithaca Daily Journal dated April 5, 1892 (below). Soon after, there were Cherry Sundays, Strawberry Sundays, Chocolate Sundays too.

FYI, most expensive ice cream sundae (also a Guinness World Record) is the Serendipity Golden Opulence Sundae, served only at the Serendipity 3 restaurant in New York City. It costs $1000 and requires reservation at least 48 hours in advance.

The Golden Opulence Sundae consists of five scoops of ice cream made with (mix of) Tahitian vanilla beans, Madagascar vanilla and Chuao chocolate; and topped with Amedei Porcelana (one of the world’s most expensive chocolates), edible 23-carat gold leaf, tiny flakes of gold, candied fruits, cherries; and garnished with real gold dragées, and sugar paste floral decorations. It is served in a Baccarat crystal goblet with an 18-karat gold spoon.

Most of the ingredients of the sundae must be flown in from different parts of the world, hence the price.
