World's longest Koran - Iraqi aims to write The oldest Quran in the world

World's longest Koran - Iraqi aims to write The oldest Quran in the world

Hussein al-Kharsan kneels, bent over a giant sheet of paper, laboriously writing the words of Islam’s holy book, the Koran, in beautiful Arabic script with a traditional wood and feather pen.

The 25-year-old Iraqi aims to take an unusual path to fame: writing the longest copy of the Koran in the world. Kharsan says the scroll is to be between 5,500 and 6,000 metres long, or 3.4 and 3.7 miles.

His aim, he says, is to set a Guinness World Record.

If that happens, it will be another entry on the Islamic holy text, which expressly prohibits the consumption of alcohol, in a record book conceived by the managing director of a brewery.

The copy of the Koran was supposed to be shown this year, when Najaf was to be the Islamic Capital of Culture, but that project has been postponed indefinitely amid serial delays and allegations of corruption.

It has not however stopped Kharsan, who graduated from Baghdad University’s college of fine arts, from continuing his work inside a religious school in Najaf, despite pains in his neck and back from long hours of carefully writing out one verse after another.

“At the beginning, the agreement was to finish the work in six months, on the basis of writing three pages out of 503 pages of the Koran every day,” Kharsan said.

“I succeeded at the beginning and worked for 16 hours a day for more than two weeks until I started suffering pains,” he said.

“The doctor asked me to stop working for about a month but I refused and told him that I work with the blessings of the Koran. Now I take pain-killing pills and work for five hours a day, which means I need about a year to finish.”

Kharsan, who began participating in Arabic calligraphy competitions when he was just nine years old, writes on four pieces of white paper that are each 1,500 metres long.

‘Leave my mark’

He has succeeded in copying 13 pages of the Koran since he started his work about a month ago. Arabic calligraphy is one of the most prominent forms of Arab and Islamic art.

“We are the people of Arabic calligraphy,” said Sheikh Ali Merza, the principal of the school where Kharsan is working on the Koran.

“Kufi calligraphy (named after Najaf’s twin city of Kufa) is well known, and when we want to do calligraphy, it is not something new for us because we practised this kind of art historically,” Merza said.

He added that Kharsan’s work will be displayed in Najaf, even if the Capital of Islamic Culture project does not go ahead.

Guinness World Records does not have any entries for the longest Koran, but the largest printed copy measures two metres (6.5 feet) high and 1.52 metres (4 feet, 11 inches) wide, and was unveiled in Russia last November.

The smallest copy, printed in Cairo in 1982 and owned by a Pakistani man, is 1.7 by 1.3 centimetres (0.66 by 0.5 of an inch), but still 571 pages long.

The biggest book in the world, meanwhile, measures five by 8.06 metres (16.4 by 26.44 feet) and weighs some 1,500 kilogrammes (3,306 pounds). It is on the life and achievements of the Prophet Mohammed, and was unveiled in Dubai in February.

Hockey Marathon event co-ordinator Lesley Plumley said going for a world record helps to bring in donations.

"The Guinness Book of World Records is fantastic for motivation for the players, for sure," she said.

"We have donations because of this world record — all the way over into Nova Scotia, people are donating money online. We are really quite excited, and I think it's a really good opportunity for everybody.”

Roughly $600,000 was raised before the opening ceremonies, so Plumley is confident they will surpass their $1.5 million goal for pediatric cancer research and intensive care equipment.

World's longest wedding dress attempt World Record in Bucharest, Romania

world's longest wedding dress attempt World Record in Bucharest, Romania

Romania has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest bridal train after a model wearing a wedding gown floated in a hot air balloon above downtown Bucharest.

The 1.85-mile-long ivory train, worn by 17-year-old model Ema Dumitrescu, floated high above a main boulevard in Romania's capital on Tuesday, the Telegraph reported.

The new record set by the silk and lace gown, beats the previous record held by a Dutch designer.

Pedestrians, however, didn't seem to make much of the event, organised by the gown's creators - the Andree Salon fashion house and the organisers of this year's biannual Wedding Fair in Bucharest.

A few bystanders looked up at the balloon, but many others ignored it.

Salon spokeswoman Lavinia Lascae said that the train, which took 100 days to stitch, was crafted by a team of 10 seamstresses.

4,700 metres of taffeta, 5.5 metres of Chantilly lace, 45 metres of lining, 1,857 sewing needles and 150 spool threads were used in the creation of the gown and train.

Largest flour taco in the world - Longest Line Of Tacos World Record

Largest flour taco in the world - Longest Line Of Tacos World Record

The 500 tacos brought to East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. by Reform Immigration for America on Thursday was impressive and made a point, but how does it compare to current Taco-related world record holders? Well, it depends on the type of Taco and who you ask. Our enterprise reporting team did some digging and we have the breakdown.

The largest flour taco in the world weighed 750 kg (1,654 lb) and was made by the city of Mexicali and Cocinex SA de CV, in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico on 8 March 2003, according to Guinness World Records.

However, Mexico beat its own record in 2011 creating a 50-meter long taco in the Mexican capital’s Plaza Garibaldi (WATCH THE VIDEO). The taco was filled with an “indeterminate” volume of onion, rice, cilantro, pork cracklings, beef, chicken, eggs and sausages. Unfortunately, the City didn’t have enough enough funds to register the record with Guinness World Records.Screen shot 2012 01 27 at 3.38.35 PM 300x222 Some Amazing Taco World Records

“We’re in the process of registering it, but it implies an expenditure that can’t be contemplated right now of more than 400,000 pesos (some $33,000),” municipal official Agustin Torres Pérez told news service EFE.

Mexico had made another record-breaking taco in the same City the year before, according to the newspaper El Mundo.

Sibu breaks Guinness world record with longest graffiti scroll

Sibu breaks Guinness world record with longest graffiti scroll

SIBU: About 500 youths painted a 1.6km-long graffiti to place Sibu in the Guinness Book of World Records — the first ever for the district.

Lanang MP and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King described the momentous event as history in-the-making for the local populace. Guinness World Records adjudicator Seyda Subasi-Gemici from Turkey was present to ensure everything went smoothly and the rules for the attempt were followed.

“My job is to record the attempt, and verify that the whole attempt took place according to the guidelines of Guinness World Records,” Seyda said.

The guidelines among others specified that the height of the canvas needed to be at least 1.5 metres.

“And there should be no gaps in the canvas. My final duty is to measure the canvas to confirm it is longer than the one in Brazil. If it exceeds the past record’s length, there will be a new record holder and the information is entered into the Guinness World Records database. A certificate will also be issued,” she added.

The event was held in conjunction with the Millennium Development Goals Awareness Campaign, co-hosted by JCI Malaysia and JCI Mandarin Sibu, and sponsored by Kolej Laila Taib (KLT) and saw hundreds of young people from schools, NGOs, and others painting their way into the Guinness World Records – Longest Graffiti Scroll – as early as 7am yesterday

“This marks a new era for Sibu as 500 youths create history, coming up with a 1.6km long graffiti to achieve a new World Guinness Record for the longest graffiti scroll.

“This is indeed a significant occasion for the people of Sibu as we show the world that Sibu ‘boleh’ and our young people ‘boleh’.

“With this achievement the world will come to know about Sibu and how dynamic its young people are,” Tiong said at the opening ceremony held at an open space next to KLT.

“Let this be the start of more good things to come and we hope others will follow suit to break more records to make Sibu better known to the world community.”

He praised the youths for their courage in taking up such challenge and elevating the town image.

The current record was set in Mar 7 this year in Brazil where 246 people painted a 1.4km-long graffiti, breaking an earlier record set in Mexico.

The usually quiet open space near KLT was turned into a hive of human activities, filled with laughter  as people from all walks of life sprayed their dreams on to the 1.6km-long canvas that snaked around the grounds.

It was a sight indeed to see design and creativity begin to manifests itself on the canvas, measuring 1.5 meter in height.

Qingdao bridge world record - China World's Longest Sea Bridge Video

Qingdao bridge - China World's Longest Sea Bridge set world record 2011.

The world's longest cross-sea bridge, spanning Jiaozhou Bay of Qingdao in East China's Shandong province, opened to traffic on Thursday amid a major effort to further consolidate this coastal city into an international shipping center for Northeast Asia.
The 41.58-km, eight-lane Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, connecting the urban district of the city to its Huangdao district, cost 14.8 billion yuan ($2.3 billion). Construction started in May 2007.

The bridge will shorten the route between the two centers by 30 km, cutting travel time from more than 40 minutes to about 20 minutes, said Han Shouxin, deputy director of the city's traffic management committee.

Previously, the longest cross-sea bridge in the world was the 36-km-long Hangzhou Bay Cross-sea Bridge that connects the cities of Jiaxing and Ningbo in East China's Zhejiang province.

"The bridge has been a long-time dream for Qingdao residents," said Qingdao Party Chief Li Qun at the inauguration ceremony.

He said the bridge will greatly improve travel from the eastern tip of Shandong's Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai, through central Shandong's Rizhao, Linyi and even to the northern areas of neighboring Jiangsu province.

It makes the one-hour economy ring for downtown Qingdao and its surrounding districts a reality and strengthens the prospect of a four-hour economy ring among cities on the Shandong Peninsula, Li said.

Guan Hua, a 30-year-old woman at a local shipping company, was excited about the bridge.

"I have to travel back and forth between Huangdao and downtown and other places in Qingdao for work and sometimes for fun with friends," she said. "It was annoying to have to fight the downtown traffic for the expressway entry to reach the destinations.

"In addition, traveling will be more pleasant with the sea views from the bridge," she added.

Sixty-one-year-old Yu Zhong'ai, from Xuejiadao community of Huangdao district, said he had to spend nearly three hours traveling from his place to visit his daughter in downtown Qingdao.

"But with the bridge I will save at least one hour," he said.

The bridge was built in four years, with several world records and national prizes achieved. Before that, it took more than 17 years for the authorities and experts to finish the exploration, planning, design and bidding for the project.

Zhou Fengjun, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said: "A hard part has been that we have had to work out techniques to cope with the high salt content and winter ice in the seas of Jiaozhou Bay, which otherwise would damage the structure of the bridge."

Huangdao district, also known as Huangdao Economic and Development Zone of Qingdao, was among the first national development zones approved in the early 1980s.

Last year the gross domestic product of the zone stood at 100 billion yuan, with its per capita GDP reaching $25,000. The zone connects the Shandong Peninsula to central and western areas of the province.

Thursday also saw the opening of the nation's longest undersea tunnel, also linking downtown Qingdao to Huangdao. The 9.47-km tunnel provides a fast link between the two areas.

World's longest clothesline of socks World Record set in Wellington

World's longest clothesline of socks World Record set in Wellington

More than 30,000 pairs of red socks set a new world record at the Cake Tin today in Wellington.

The new world's longest clothesline of socks included seventeen 50 metre clotheslines and measured more than 3km.

The record attempt was organised by the Sir Peter Blake Trust and supported by Foundation Partner Westpac, PBT Group, Gallagher Group and Placemakers, as part of Red Sock Day celebration.

Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand and Lady Susan worked alongside Wellington Phoenix players and coach Ricki Herbert, volunteers and local school pupils to peg up the socks.

Some of the socks used in the record attempt will be donated to Christchurch schools.

The event was recorded by four adjudicators and a land surveyor who will send their information to Guinness World Records for confirmation.

The previous Guinness World Record for the longest clothesline of socks was 2,324.08 metres set by the Tripsdill Amusement Park in Germany in May 2010.

Sir Peter Blake liked to wear his red socks for good luck, and during the America’s Cup Challenge of 1995 New Zealanders supported the boat by putting on their own red socks.

Sir Peter Blake Trust Chief Executive Shelley Campbell said she was thrilled the Trust and Westpac, had managed to break the record in honour of Sir Peter.

"The red socks are a symbol of Kiwi spirit and Peter would have been proud of what we've managed to do here today,'' Cambpell said.

"Peter set a few world records in his time, so we thought it would be great to set one of our own this year. New Zealanders from all around the country have been a part of creating history, and they've had a great time doing it."

Earlier in the day 12-year-old Tawa schoolgirls Maddy Booth and Caitlin Taylor had to tidy up after Sir Anand when they observed him pegging his socks upside down.

The socks were being pegged by the large group of volunteers from their tops and were at least 1cm apart.

But Sir Anand pegged his socks from the bottom and there appeared to be some official scrutineering issues about how far apart Sir Anand was pegging his socks.

The problem was discretely solved when the schoolgirls stepped in and restored clothesline order.

Sir Anand, who left with his party about 8.15am, appeared none-the-wiser.

One of the three official scrutineers for the world record attempt, Chapman Tripp lawyer Marcelo Rodriguez Ferrere closely observed Sir Anand's clothesline style.

"Yes there was an error there but it was not a material error," Mr Ferrere noted.

He said it was irrelevant how the socks were pegged to the clothesline - by their tops or bottoms.

He also noted the schoolgirls had diplomatically and quickly moved in to restore clothesline order to the record attempt.

Caitlin and Maddy both said they found it funny when Sir Anand had hung his socks upside down.

"It was fun to talk to him," Caitlin said.

The Red Socks Day campaign is part of the Trust's Leadership Week (July 1- 8, 2011) an annual event that highlights the strategic relevance and value that great leadership provides for New Zealand and showcases the work being done to develop our nation’s leadership capability.

Havana—Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. But one Cuban man is hoping that a 268-foot (81.8-meter) super-stogie he rolled is something more: a world record.

Jose Castelar and his assistants started working on it at the end of April and finished Tuesday.

British diplomats were on hand to measure the cigar. It has yet to be verified by Guinness World Records.

Castelar already holds the Guinness mark for a 148-foot (45-meter) cigar he rolled in 2008.

World's longest hockey game break Guinness world Record by Calgarians

World's longest hockey game, longest hockey game Guinness world Record, longest hockey game video, longest hockey game 2011, Calgarian Scott Shaw longest hockey game
Calgarian Scott Shaw is about to hit the ice in Edmonton for 10 straight days of hockey in an attempt to raise money for equipment in the battle against cancer.

Shaw is one of 40 players who'll be playing on an outdoor rink in Sherwood Park starting today with the goal of raising $1 million for a new Linear Accelerator used in radiation treatment.

The teams are also trying to break the Guiness Book of Records for the world's longest hockey game.

"I'm nervous and excited about it at the same time," said Shaw. "This is the fourth time we've done this, so I sort of know what I'm getting into - the main thing is to take care of your feet."

The 37-year-old was part of the last marathon hockey game in 2008, when the group raised almost $560,000 to help the Alberta Cancer Foundation purchase a confocal microscope for the Cross Cancer Institute.

Shaw lost his father to cancer in 1991 as well as an uncle and friend, and knows the impact the disease makes on families.

"I've been directly affected like everyone has," added Shaw. "Now I have a newborn in the family and would like to help find a cure."

Brent Saik is the captain of the idea, with the first face-off in 2003. Saik organized the games after his father and wife died from cancer.

"Everybody playing or helping out have all unfortunately been touched by cancer," noted Saik. "The biggest accomplishment of this game is to help get the Linear Accelerator."

Saik said the Linear Accelerator is the latest in radiation therapy treatment. He said other treatments kill healthy cells, but the Linear Accelerator only kills cancer cells.

According to Christy Soholt, Alberta Cancer Foundation communications and marketing associate, the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton will eventually have two of these units, and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary will have one.

"This is a fabulous opportunity for us just to have someone so interested in raising money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation," said Soholt. "The awareness for us and the dollars for us is great."

The pucks drops for 39 men and one woman today and they'll play over 240 hours of non-stop hockey, until Feb. 21. The record they have to beat is their own, set in 2008.

Shaw is the lone Calgarian on the team and said the hockey is pretty good, even if it slows down in the wee hours of the morning.

World's longest serving den mother set Guinness World Record 2011

When Adele Trapp first volunteered as a den mother for one of Brooklyn's Cub Scout groups, Dwight Eisenhower was President and a first-class stamp cost three cents.

That was 53 years ago. The mild-mannered great-grandmother has been opening her heart to kids ever since.
world's longest-serving den mother photo, Dwight Eisenhower picture, Brooklyn's Cub Scout groups Guinness World Record 2011, longest serving den mother in the world
Trapp, 96, has attended weekly scout meetings of Bedford-Stuyvesant's Pack 263 for more than half her life and has taught kids arts and crafts while offering pearls of wisdom.

In honor of her decades-long commitment, she has just been honored as the world's longest-serving den mother by Guinness World Records.

She overtook Marion Rohner of the Hudson Valley Council Boy Scouts, who served 43 years.

"It's beautiful; it's very nice," Trapp said as she was presented with a certificate of her achievements at St. Phillips Church on Decatur St. this week.

"I'm not out for an award."

This is not the first time Trapp has been a record breaker.

In 2005, when she was 90, she was celebrated as the oldest employee in New York's public school system for her work as a full-time school aide at Junior High School 258 in Brooklyn.

"She loves children. If we are at home, I'll hear her say 'Where are the children?'" said her daughter Evelyn Rainford, 75, who is cub master to the same Brooklyn scout group.

"She's just a simple lady who loves children. That's the bottom line."

Trapp, who lives in Crown Heights, has seen generations of young scouts come to St. Phillips Church, where the two-hour Tuesday evening get-togethers are held.

One of her former scouts, who is now retired, has brought his own kids and grandkids through the doors, her daughter said.

"The children, they look at you as though you're their parent," Trapp explained.

"You have to really take care of them because they make themselves a part of you."

Trapp arrives at meetings each week decked out in a bright red, slightly frayed jacket covered in badges of merit from her years with Pack 263.

It sits over her dark green pants and brown shirt, held in place with a regulation scout necktie.

Given her impeccable attire and manners, Trapp has little patience for any boy who isn't equally well-dressed and behaved.

Still, the youngsters respond with adoration.

"She's fun," said Zachary Bentley, 10.

"She's helpful. She gives us good advice."

Adrian Israel, 12, marveled at the thought of his den mother appearing in next year's edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Then he revealed another reason he's so fond of this hard-working woman.

Only Don, who portrayed Bob Hughes in his CBS show since October 1960 without a break, had played the same character longer, but since As The World Turns ended in September after 13,858 episodes, the record will pass to Bill.

The proud Corrie star said: "Guinness World Records have been in touch and want to fly me over to New York for some sort of ceremony with Don Hastings."

He added he has no plans to retire. "I always say that, while I can still do it and while they still want me, retiring isn't an option.

"I've met the Queen on numerous occasions, I've been to Buckingham Palace, Downing Street and Chequers. I've played golf with top professionals and I've written two books. Those things have enriched my life."

He has spent the last 17 years as an unpaid carer and gives away his produce to the elderly.

Colossal

The 2010 edition of the Guinness World Records book also includes an Oxfordshire entry for 'Fastest marathon dressed as a bottle (female)'.

Gill Begnor from Hook Norton completed the race in 4 hours, 54 minutes and 36 seconds, raising money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

Records this year include the 'World's Smallest Cow' which at just 33.5 inches is smaller than the average sheep.

Other animals that have hit the top include 'Dog with the Longest Tongue' (4.5in/11.4 cm), 'Darius the Longest Rabbit' (4ft 3 in/1.2 m) and the 'World's Oldest Gorilla' ('Colo', 53).

However, it is not just animals that have made the grade in 2010. The 'Longest Nose on a Human Being' can be found in Turkey and measures a colossal 8.89cm.

Raymond Marshall from the Guinness World Records was on hand measuring the finished pizza.

"For the pizza to be the longest in the world, it has to be one single piece, so it cannot be small individual pizzas," Marshall said.

"The current record is 407 meters and today we are hoping to achieve more than one thousand meters, which is over a kilometer."

It has not yet been officially announced whether the Krakovians managed the record or not.

World's longest human domino chain set Guinness World Record - China

The world's largest human domino, comprising of 10,267 people, was formed on the grasslands in Ordos, the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, on Thursday, toppling a Guinness World Record created a decade ago.

The people were divided into more than 50 groups to form the word Ordos both in Chinese and English.

In a human domino, the person standing first falls backward, causing the row of people behind him to fall one after another. It took an hour for the domino to complete.

"This magnificent feat was very hard to achieve, but we were all confident we would rewrite history," said Liu Manshan, who was in charge of the event and head of the culture bureau of Ordos' Dongsheng district.

The last Guinness World Record of the largest human domino was created by 9,234 students in Singapore in 2000.

World's Largest(Longest) French Fry set world record - Angelo Turco

Is the 34-inch curly-cut potato discovered in Orchard Park last week truly the Lord of the Fries?
Angelo Turco would like to present a challenger to the throne.
When Angelo Turco read about two guys nominating their 34-inch french fry as the world's largest, he "chuckled a little bit."
Not even 3 feet?
At his business, Louie's Foot Long Hot Dogs, curly cue french fries that size are as common as ketchup, he said.

"That's nothing," Turco said. "Ours can be 8 feet, 10 feet long."
John Benbenek and Ryan Vedder drew the attention of news media earlier this week after announcing they had discovered a world-record fry while having lunch at Taffy's in Orchard Park. After an Internet search that suggested the record was 26 inches, they started making plans and alerting reporters.
They pitched their spud strip for an appearance on Jay Leno's Tonight Show, but a Tonight Show publicist said Tuesday they haven't been scheduled.
But Benbenek and Vedder went to eBay and are auctioning "The World's Largest French Fry," described in the listing as 32 inches long.
The bidding had reached $20.50 by Tuesday afternoon.
Bidders were offered the chance to buy it immediately for $10,000.
Turco at Louie's offered some insight into why the bidding was so low.
"Really, not even three feet?" Turco said. "To see them talking about a 3-foot french fry, it's sort of a nonissue with us."

Turco is the son of Louis Turco, who opened his hot dog stand off Sheridan Drive in the Town of Tonawanda in the 1950s. Turco said his father invented the curly fry and patented a rotary fry cutter that makes long potato strings from the biggest commercially available potatoes, called 40-count bakers.
Louis Turco, who is retired, still comes in to cut the french fries.

"He's the original, and he's still doing it," his son said.
He acknowledged that cutting the potato into a single long fry is only half the battle. You still have to get it into the fryer, and out again, without breaking it. But Louie's does it, he said.
"We were the first to make the curly cue fry," he said. "We are the originator."

Welshman attempts world record by painting his car with nail polish

Welshman attempts world record by painting his car with nail polish, world recods 2010,worlds longest painting record
A Welshman is attempting to make the record books by painting a car with nail varnish - and streaming the entire process online.

David Sheath, 28, plans to painstakingly cover an entire Fiat 500 in pink polish - streaming his progress live and non-stop at pinkmyride.tv.

He is hoping the viral will be named as the world's longest advert by the Guiness Book of Records.

The semi-professional footballer will live and sleep in a studio in Clapham, South London, while he completes the task, which he expects will take at least a week.
Guinness said it would look into David's claim for the record of longest online advert.

A spokesperson for Guinness World Records said: 'This sounds like a potentially interesting claim.'

It is estimated David will need 200 pots of pink varnish and make 240,000 strokes to transform the white car into a pink car.
