World's largest bra chain

World's largest bra chain set World Records by kiwi Girl Guides in New Zealand

Girl Guides in the New Zealand town of Dargaville have put "Bra-gaville" on the map with an uplifting, record-breaking effort, stringing nearly 170,000 bras together.

The last brassiere was hooked to its neighbour late on Sunday night to create the chain of 169,324 supporting undergarments.

The chain, laid out in a zig-zag pattern at the town's Memorial Park, was about 135 kilometres long and breaks the previous world record of 166,625 bras set in Australia three years ago.

The project was part of Girl Guides New Zealand and the Breast Cancer Foundation's efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer.

It took two years to collect the bras, which were donated from across the country, Australia, Britain and the US.

About 100 Girl Guides took two days to connect the bras by their hooks and eyes.

Chain instigator Robyn Martinovich said she was happy but relieved the project was over.

She had seen enough bras to last her a lifetime, and so had her husband, she told AAP.

She had no idea where the suggestion of calling Dargaville "Bra-gaville" came from, but thought it was hilarious.

On Monday, they had already started dismantling the chain.

The best bras will be donated to women in the Pacific Islands and Africa.
Local politicians will verify the record, the details of which will be sent to the Guinness Book of World Records.

HCG forms set Limca Book of Record - Largest human awareness ribbon for breast cancer

HCG forms set Limca Book of Record - Largest human awareness ribbon for breast cancer.

Bangaloreans from all walks of life came together to create awareness about breast cancer here on Sunday. The event was organised by HealthCare Global Enterprises Ltd. (HCG) to commemorate the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed in October every year.

As many as 6,583 people formed the largest pink ribbon, symbolising breast cancer awareness, at the Sullivan Police Grounds here. Donning pink t-shirts, holding pink umbrellas and wearing pink head-gears, the participants that included cancer survivors, cancer patients, care givers, nurses, corporate workers and students, stood for 10 minutes in the shape of a ribbon.

Said to be the largest human awareness ribbon, the attempt will be sent to the Guinness Book of World Records for adjudication. The current record for the largest human awareness ribbon is held by Saudi Arabia. Organisers claimed that the record will be featured in the 2013 edition of Limca Book of Records.

B.S. Ajaikumar, chairman of HCG, said that the event was organised to spread awareness about breast cancer.

“The fear of cancer is worse than the disease itself. In India, there is lack of awareness on health and people do not undergo regular preventive health check-up. Preventive check-up is important for early diagnosis of cancer. We have issued 6,000 mammography coupons free to the participants, which will be the first step in eradicating the social stigma associated with the word ‘cancer',” he said.

Gopinath K.S., surgical oncologist, who participated in the event, said that such initiatives were important. “Most patients come for consultation only after the disease has reached an advanced stage. There is no better way to educate people that cancer is curable in its early stages. The phobia of cancer is worse than the disease itself,” he said.

Hurley has been the cosmetics company's celebrity breast cancer champion for the past 15 years and for 24 hours across Thursday and Friday she helped turn monuments around the globe pink. She was in New York to flick the switch on the Empire State Building's lights, and other landmarks to be turned pink included the Sydney Opera House in Australia and the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel in Mumbai.

A total of 39 buildings were lit up - enough to gain the Guinness World Record for Most Landmarks Illuminated for a Cause in 24 Hours. And Hurley is delighted with the accolade and awareness drive.

The model along with Evelyn Lauder of Estee Lauder, which Hurley endorses, were presented with an official certificate at the Empire State Building in New York Friday in recognition of Most Landmarks Illuminated for a Cause in 24 Hours.

"It's wonderful to see the global impact that these illuminated landmarks have, motivating women to see their doctors regularly, perform a monthly breast self exam, and get an annual mammogram if they're over the age of 40. Our goal is to spread this message to women in all corners of the world," femalefirst.co.uk quoted Hurley as saying.

The effort began in Australia, with the illumination of Federation Square in Melbourne and the National Library of Australia in Canberra, before around the world to places including the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai, Burj al Arab in Dubai, Lentos Museum in Austria, Mexico's Angel de la Independencia and Tokyo Tower in Japan, culminating with the Empire State Building.
