Sonim XP3300 Force - World's Toughest Phone set Guinness World Record

World's Toughest Phone - securing its entry into the Guinness World Records.

Sonim announces new mobile phone with longest talk time XP3300 Force.

Lots of phones claim to be tough. Plenty of them are even built to meet military-grade specifications for resistance to water, shock, dust, salt fog, humidity, solar radiation, altitude, and extreme temperature storage. But Sonim can take that claim to toughness one step further, now that the Sonim XP3300 Force has been officially entered into the Guinness World Records.

The ultra-rugged XP3300, which PCMag reviewed back in February (see the slideshow below), survived a drop of over 82 feet onto concrete without any operational damage to claim the title. That's higher than a twelve-story building!

The previous world record has been held since 2008 by the JCB Toughphone, for withstanding a drop of 10.6 feet. To fulfill the requirements for inclusion in the Guinness World Records, the XP3300's record attempt was witnessed by independent judges from Guinness World Records, who tested the phone by making a call and sending a text message to confirm it was still working after the drop.

"We wanted to stamp Sonim's name on the World Record, confirming that the Sonim XP3300 Force is the toughest phone in the world," said Sonim CEO Bob Plaschke. "Most mobile phones are drop-tested to a metre, which just isn't enough in extreme environments such as construction sites, oil rigs or in the forest."

ABOUT SONIM TECHNOLOGIES

Sonim Technologies ( www.sonimtech.com ) is the provider of the world's most rugged, water-submersible mobile phones designed specifically for workers in challenging outdoor and industrial environments. Sonim's industry-leading three-year comprehensive warranty has redefined customer expectations of rugged technology. Sonim provides a suite of high-performance workforce management applications including push-to-talk and lone worker safety services on cellular networks. The company is headquartered in San Mateo, California and offers its products in over 50 countries.

According to Sonim, the XP3300 surpasses military specifications for ruggedness, and is water and dust proof. It is certified against salt, fog, humidity, transport shock, and thermal shock. It's even water-submersible to 6.5 feet for 1 hour.

At PCMag, we tossed the XP3300 against brick walls and froze it into blocks of ice without a hitch. Our lead mobile analyst, Sascha Segan, got an XP3300 that was encased in seven pounds of concrete, which he proceeded to break out by repeatedly whacking it with a hammer until it crumbled away. Incredibly, the phone still worked, the screen was undamaged, and it was able to make and receive calls, though a few keys were left out of commission.

World's largest stop-motion animated film with Nokia N8

World's largest stop-motion animated film shot entirely with Nokia N8

A short movie filmed using just three Nokia smartphone cameras has set a record for the world's largest stop-motion animated film.

The film "Gulp" was produced over 11,000 square feet of sand on Pendene Beach in South Wales over a week, according to the Guinness World Records.

"It was shot using three Nokia N8 smartphones attached to a cherry picker hoisted 36 meters (118ft) in the air," it said.

With the beach as a canvas, fish, seagulls and the sea were created with a rake, while the film's prop designers built a life-size fishing boat that was used by a "fisherman" played by one of the film's artists.

"The film was a huge test of planning and coordination with mother nature. We were incredibly lucky with conditions and tide times – sometimes we got our final frame for the day just as the waves crashed in around our set," co-director Will Studd said.

"Gulp" tells the story of a lone fisherman who becomes the hunted after landing a huge catch, the Guinness World Records site said.

Its directors were "Sumo Science", who form part of Oscar-winning animation studio Aardman —the creators of the famous stop-motion characters Wallace and Gromit.

SWAP Nova - World's lightest touch screen phone 2011 set Guinness World Record

SWAP Nova weighs only 43g,the lightest touch-screen phone ever.

While at the Gadget Show Live, we managed to get a sneak-peek of the Nova ahead of it’s official weigh-in, to see what the fuss is all about.

The size has to be seen to be believed- it was hard to find something of comparable size- we settled on a Mars bar.

The 1.76-inch screen has a resolution of 220x176 pixels, and that tiny screen does mean a tiny battery, which promises to charge in under 2 hours. It can connect to PC by USB, with sWaP (It stands for smart watch and phone)

Inside the box, you’ll get the phone, stereo earphones, a keychain loop, lanyard, mini-stylus, which is already attached to the phone on the right side, protective case and a 2GB microSD.

The phone may be slightly more bare-bones than a smartphone on the features front, but does manage to include Bluetooth connectivity, FM radio, and can play video and music.

It has also been recently upgraded to quad-band, meaning it can travel with you around the world- it really shouldn’t trouble your baggage allowance. Aside from messaging and call services there’s also WAP internet if you’re willing to do that on a sub-two-inch display...

The Nova, available in red and black, it’s available now at sWaP’s own site, as well as other stockists like Maplin and Amazon, priced at £299. There’s also a “Crystal” Nova, with a crystal rim, and white leather-coated ‘hook’ at the top- if you’re into that stuff. The ‘bling’ does add an extra four grams though.
