Christmas lights world record - Largest number of Christmas lights

Christmas lights world record - Largest number of Christmas lights

The couple, from Forest Act, Australia, have 331,038 lights covering their property.

David Richards, a barrister and father of three, has been working for the past four years to bring together all the decorations.

The illuminations have helped to raise money for the charity SIDS and Kids -  an organisation Mr Richards said helped his family during tough times in 2002.

A family has shot into the Guinness Book of Records after setting a new record for the largest number of Christmas lights.

David and Janean Richards, from Australia's capital Canberra, decorated their home with an astonishing 331,038 different lights.

They are hoping to use the new-found fame of their house to raise money for charity.

In order to break the record, which is to be included in Guinness World Records for the first time following the Richards' success, they were told they would need at least 250,000 lights.

The display had to be turned on for at least 10 minutes, and filmed in a video sent off to London for verification.

Following the switch-on ceremony earlier this month, the family has now been declared the official record-holders.

The annual Christmas display has been growing ever larger since Mr Richards started it four years ago, and this year's show required hundreds of hours of work.

In the end it included more than 18 miles of lights, as well as 15,000 cable ties and a 60ft Christmas tree at its centre.

'I did it for my kids initially and then it just got bigger and bigger,' Mr Richards told the Canberra Times.

'I remember one year a mother and child came through the driveway thinking no one was around and they started dancing to the music - it's all about putting a smile on people's faces.'

The display is being used to raise money for SIDS and Kids, a charity which aims to reduce mortality among infants and new mothers.

Mr Richards, who refuses to tell anyone - including his wife - how much the lights cost, says this year is the last in which he will put up the record-breaking display.

He plans to pass on the lights to someone else who wants to fundraise for SIDS and Kids.

Christmas world record attempt for Radio Northwick Park hospital

A
hospital radio station is set for a Christmas Day world record-breaking attempt to hold the biggest present giveaway.

Radio Northwick Park, which broadcasts to patients in the hospital in Watford Road, is teaming up with charity The Kindness Offensive to give out presents to children at the hospital and try and set the record.

The station is also hosting a show with Harrow Community Radio every Saturday in the run-up to Christmas to allow patients to pick their festive favourites, as well as a live request show on Christmas Day itself.

Chairman Matt Blank said: “It's not nice to be in on Christmas Day itself, so on December 25 we'll be doing a special live request show, aimed heavily at the children in the hospital.”

World's longest Christmas cake set Guinness World Record in Shanghai,China

World's longest Christmas cake set Guinness World Record in Shanghai,China

A one-kilometre long cake achieved a new Guinness World Record in Shanghai on Thursday during a charity event to raise funds for children with cancer.

                                                World's longest Christmas cake picture

The world's longest ever Christmas cake, a 1,068 metre-long (3,504 foot) vanilla flavoured log with a bitter chocolate frosting, was created by 80 cooks from the five star Pudong Shangri-la Hotel.

Preparation took several days and the final set up involved 150 staff members working for 24 hours straight, with the cake placed on 156 tables lined up in the hotel lobby.

"We make the sponge, we bake and then, when it's cooled down, we make our vanilla cream, which is inside, we roll it up, and we make our very secret recipe of chocolate frosting," explained the hotel's pastry chef Yusuf Yaran.

"We put it all over the cake, and then we have our candy decorations and some icing sugar on the top," Yaran said.

The record-breaking recipe required 904 organic eggs, 1,045 kilograms (2,304 pounds) of wheat flour, 209 kilograms (461 pounds) of cane sugar, 633 litres (1,114 pints) of fresh cream, 401 kilograms (884 pounds) of bitter chocolate and 34 kilograms (75 pounds) of vanilla from Tahiti.

Ulrich Jablonka, executive chef at the hotel, said that the planning was the most arduous part of the process.

The previous record for a Christmas log cake was achieved by French chefs in Paris exactly a year ago, on December 1st, 2010, according to Guinness World Records.

It measured 207.8 metres (682 feet).

Chefs in Shanghai intended to make the cake stretch out for 888 metres (2,913 feet), so the announcement of the final length far exceeded expectations.

The cake was sliced immediately and sold to the public for 2 yuan (0.31 US dollars) per piece.

World's Biggest Christmas Stocking World Record set by Children's Society

On Friday 14th December The Children's Society set a new record for the Worlds Biggest Christmas Stocking. An adjudicator from the Guinness World Records measured it at 32.56m (in the leg) by 14.97m (heel to toe), smashing the last record set by a group in Canada just weeks ago. Thousands of knitted red squares were sent in by supporters who were sponsored to knit to raise money for the Children's Society. We beat our target for squares and raised a staggering £14,000 which will be used to ensure that every child has a good childhood.

The massive stocking weighed the equivalent of 5 reindeer, was as long as 3 double decker buses and we had nearly 1000 presents to fill it with. The presents will be given to children in our projects around the country.

It was a mammoth effort and so many people made enormously valuable contributions. Thanks are due to:

- Everyone who knitted red squares and sent them in
- All the volunteers to took squares away to sew and came along to the church in the last week
- The American InterContinental University for making the 'heel'
- The London College of Fashion for sewing squares together
- St Mary Magdalene, Munster Square, for the use of the church for sewing the stocking together
- The ExCel, London, for the use of their venue
- British Felt Ltd for the donation of felt for the top of the stocking
- Fairway PSD Ltd for the donation of boxes and presents and help with the logistics
- The children of Fosters Primary School for being our wonderful elves (which you can see in the picture)
