Pillow Fight Day - Pillow Fight Manila 2011 aims for new Guinness world record

Pillow Fight Day - Pillow Fight Manila 2011 aims for new Guinness world record

MANILA, Philippines - Here’s another chance for Pinoys to land in the record books. Pillow Fight Manila 2011 organizers are hoping to muster a crowd of at least 5,000 to break the current Guinness World Record for the largest participation in what has now become a global pop culture craze.

An International Pillow Fight Day is actually celebrated every April 2 in cities across the US, Canada and European countries like Spain, Poland and the UK, but Pillow Fight Manila 2011 will occur at the end of the year. The Hotel Sogo chain is spearheading the project and the campaign for attendees, specifically aged 18 and older, to help meet the goal of eclipsing the current 3,706-strong Guinness record made at the Minehead Butlins in Somerset in the UK on Nov. 14, 2008. The UK event was the highlight of the BBC’s Children in Need night.

Similarly, the Philippine staging will not just send feathers flying but will also jumpstart a Pillow for a Cause fund drive. This is meant to support student welfare and scholarships as well as facility improvement in state colleges and universities, according to organizers.

In the lead up to the main attraction in November, a series of cluster events like college and mall tours will run from July to October, targeting students, youth and young professionals to register as United Pillow Fighters, if not to encourage them to take part in the online activities for special prizes and rewards. Adding excitement to the culminating activity will be a concert featuring Pinoy rock acts. There’s no official venue yet, but the first-ever Pillow Fight Manila will definitely be held outdoors following the tradition of massive pillow fight events in the different parts of the world. Plus, it will use soft pillows (to be provided for by the hotel) and observe strict safety guidelines.

Hotel Sogo officials said that they decided to mount the event because like any good old pillow fight, they expect it to appeal to the good-humored nature of Pinoys as the game creates “fun and energy, bond and camaraderie between friends and strangers.”

“We are inviting all our kababayan to help us break the record, which now stands at a little less than 4,000 people participating in a pillow fight, come November 2011,” said Gus Corpus, Hotel Sogo’s chief operating officer in a presscon.

The last time the Philippines made it to the Guinness World Book of Records for an organized gathering was in 2009 in Cebu for the world’s largest dance class initiated by Dancesport Team Cebu City.

Most number of people attending a mass circumcision set World Record by Philippine

Hundreds of boys in a Philippine city turned out Saturday for a daylong "circumcision party" to provide a safe, free procedure for a rite of passage that most local males undergo as preteens.

Some boys cried in their mothers' arms while others bit their shirts to stifle sobs as doctors carried out the surgery on dozens of makeshift operating tables inside a sports stadium in Marikina city east of Manila. Outside, other boys lined up to await their turn.

"I'm a big boy now," one boy who had just finished the surgery bragged.

Officials said the event — touted in a press statement as a "circumcision party" — aims to promote safe circumcision and to offer to poor residents free surgery that would otherwise cost at least $40 in private hospitals.

As of mid-afternoon, nearly 1,500 boys aged 9 years and up had been circumcised while many were still waiting in line, city health officer Dr. Alberto Herrera said.

In the Philippines, preadolescent and adolescent boys traditionally are circumcised during summer school break from March to May. In rural areas, the surgery is sometimes performed by non-doctors using crude methods.

The city also hopes to establish a world record for the number of people attending a mass circumcision.

"We applied for the Guinness Book of World Records and we are recording everything so we can send all the data to them and hopefully it will be recognized," Vice Mayor Jose Fabian Cadiz said.

Marikina, the country's shoemaking capital, was recognized by Guinness in 2002 for creating what was then the world's biggest pair of shoes.

A city east of the Philippine capital Manila is trying to set a world record for the most number of circumcised boys on May 7. The city government of Marikina has announced its "Tule (Circumcision) Party" to highlight the event.

In a statement, the city government said the "Tule Party" would be held at the city sports complex and invites boys aged and up to undergo circumcision for free.

Traditionally, Filipino males undergo circumcision during the summer breaks (between April and May) at a cost ranging $30 to $100.

According the city health officer Alberto Herrera, the "party" would be held from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Qualified doctors will be conducting the surgery using modern medical facilities for the event, he added.

An estimated 1,500 boys are expected to participate in the event to make it to the Guinness Book of World Records list.

MANILA — Philippine environmentalists have set a world record for the most trees planted simultaneously, kickstarting an enormous reforesteration programme, organisers said Thursday.

Nearly 7,000 people helped in the mass planting of saplings in denuded forest and grassland in the eastern province of Camrines Sur on Wednesday, said Mara Joneil Cordova, spokeswoman for El Verde (The Green) project.

"We had 64,096 trees planted in 15 minutes. This was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records that everything was accurate and correct," Cordova told AFP.

The effort beat the previous Guinness world record of 50,033 trees planted in India last year, she said.

Wednesday marked the start of the provincial government-backed programme to plant 12 million trees in the logged forests of Camarines Sur by next year.

The planting, on government-owned land, is intended to stop erosion and restore watersheds, she said.

The forests of the Philippines are among the 10 most endangered in the world, according to global environment group Conservation International.
