To celebrate the 40th birthday of Pong — one of the earliest arcade video games — its maker, Atari, has turned a 22-story building in Kansas City into what may be the "world's largest game of Pong."

While the authorities of Guinness World Records haven't made that title official, the whole setup is pretty impressive.

As a press release by the Downtown Council of Kansas City explains, the gigantic game is to be featured during the city's annual "City Lights" event and a traditional tree-lighting ceremony.  The south side of the Kansas City Marriott Downtown will serve as the "screen" for the enormous Pong game.

The Transformers robots have remained one of Britain’s most popular toys over the past 25 years despite a dramatic change in children’s tastes, retailers have disclosed.

The chain, born in September 1985, has marked its anniversary by releasing details of the nation's favourite toys from their top selling gadgets and games.

According to company figures, Toys R Us has sold more than 2.5 billion toys to 300 million customers at the chain’s 75 stores across Britain.

But despite children’s playtime habits have changed over the past 25 years, it seems youngsters still appreciate the wars between the Autobots and the Decepticons.

Experts said the 2007 Hollywood film, starring Megan Fox and Josh Duhamel, helped keep the toys in the bestseller range.

“While technology is now more popular than ever before with children, customers who have been with us for the full 25 years will start to recognise some toys which are making a comeback,” said Mike Coogan, the chain’s marketing director.

"Back in the eighties all the kids wanted to own the Transformers robots, and while they died out during the nineties they are hugely popular once again due to the 2007 movie which was based on the original series.”

The toy giant said it had witnessed a dramatic shift in tastes. Two decades ago children were nagging their parents for football stickers, Sylvanian Families and Transformers Robots.

But in recent years some of the biggest sellers have been high-tech toys such as Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3 and XBox 360.

What has also remained consistent is the impact and influence of television programmes and movies, Mr Coogan said.

“We are… seeing huge demand for soft toys and characters from popular TV shows - even more adult shows such as Who Wants To Be a Millionaire influences the games parents are buying for their children,” he said.
It all began with Transformers, Robots in Disguise and Optimus Prime in 1985. The vehicles that switched from vehicle to robot and back again were in huge demand at Christmas.

Since then Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (1990) and GameBoy (1991) Power Rangers (1194) and POGS (1995) have all had their 15 minutes of fame.
Bob The Builder, Bratz and BeyBlades are also names which will ring bells with mums and dads up and down Britain.

In 2008 High School Musical Dance Mats were hugely popular. The following year Go Go Pet Hamsters were the must-have.

Other movies and TV merchandise loved by kids over the years includes In the Night Garden, High School Musical , Batman and Ghost busters.

Most recently Toy Story 3 launched in UK cinemas and insiders speculate sales for the movie's merchandise will be massive this Christmas

Non-stop playing game set Guinness World Record 2010 by Dutch gamers

On Friday, six Dutch gamers broke the Guinness World Book for Records for non-stop gaming, playing Red Dead Redemption for a whopping 50 hours straight on a Sony PlayStation 3.

Reports say they could have kept going, but unanimously decided that they had had enough.

The 50-hour marathon blows away the previous record set last September by Chirantan Patnaik from India with an impressive continuous playing time of 40 hours and 20 minutes.

The team of six champion gamers included Edward and Maykel Leest, Hengelo Sven de Vries, Renzo Bos, Robbie van Eijkeren and Marcel van Waardenburg. The award was given out by an official Guinness representative who was flown in from London especially for the occasion.

In addition to being able to make their claim to fame, each of the gamers took home a cash prize of 1,000 Euros for their accomplishment, as well as a TwistDock, docking station, a new gadget that keeps your controllers charged; adds more USB ports, neatly hides all  your cables and makes spare charger available with a little spin of the dock.

Vogels, based in the Netherlands, who also created and sponsored the event, created the gadget which the gamers used during their play.  No availability date has been set for Canada, but TwistDock is expected to arrive in the US in Q4.

Assassin's Creed II Game enters Guinness Record 2010

We’ve often thought that Guiness World Records could be a bit dumb. There’s a probably a world record for eating the most cup-cakes in under 30 seconds while underwater with a pineapple down your trunks. They’re silly.

And that kind of applies to Assassin’s Creed II’s “coveted” award of… “video game featured on the most magazine covers”. We’re not making this shit up. Assassin’s Creed II featured on more covers than any other game between April 2009 and April 2010. An accolade which is probably causing someone to head-hunt Ubisoft’s PR department.

Apparently, Assassin’s Creed II featured on 127 covers throughout 32 different countries. We suppose that is a pretty big deal. But this is still a pretty dumb world record.

Right, we’re off to try and break that underwater cup-cake eating content. Bought the pineapple earlier. Don’t let us forget it.
