Allan Stewart - World's oldest graduate

Allan Stewart - World's oldest graduate

Sydney - A 97-year-old retired Australian dentist was to receive his masters degree in clinical science on Friday in what Southern Cross University said could make him the world's oldest new graduate.

Allan Stewart, who entered the Guinness World Records in 2006 when he completed a law degree at the age of 91, is graduating in clinical science from Southern Cross University.

This is his fourth degree after completing dentistry in 1936.

He went back to school in his 80s to keep himself mentally active.

Mr Stewart, who was born in 1915, has six children, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchilden.

He worked as a dentist and earned his second degree in dental surgery.

He finished his third degree in law - typically six years - in less than five because he said that "time was of the essence and I better get a wriggle on in case I didn't make my graduation".

"I think I can hang up my mortar board and academic robes after this one - although I said that after my last degree and then I got bored," Mr Stewart told Agence-France Presse news agency before his graduation ceremony late on Friday in the state of New South Wales.

Mr Stewart said people were never too old to study.

"It is never too late to expand your mind, make new friends and challenge yourself to achieve something worthwhile."

Fourth degree

The clinical science masters degree is the fourth degree for the great-grandfather, who began his university studies in the 1930s with a degree in dentistry.

After a long career as a dentist, during which time he became a Doctor of Dental Surgery on completion of his second degree, Stewart decided in his eighties to study law to help keep his mind active.

"As I approached the age of 90 I realized that time was of the essence and I had better get a wriggle on in case I didn't make my graduation," he said.

"So I attended extra summer schools and managed to complete the six-year course in four-and-a-half years, graduating in 2006. Turns out I needn't have rushed."

Stewart, who walks daily and meditates regularly, keeps his mind alert by reading medical textbooks and crime novels and playing bridge.

He enrolled in his latest course in 2009 and said while it had been a "tremendous challenge" he had enjoyed it immensely and would strongly encourage any older people to return to study.

'Never too late'

"People should never use the excuse that 'I am too old to study' or 'I have left my run too late'," he said. "It is never too late to expand your mind, make new friends and challenge yourself to achieve something worthwhile."

Stewart, who had six children and now has 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, is modest about his achievements.

New Delhi, Dec 16 : DataWind, the Canadian company that is manufacturing Aakash, the world’s cheapest tablet, finally has started the online booking and pre-booking of the much anticipated low cost Android tablet.

Aakash tablet is now available on http://www.aakashtablet.com/. Datawind puts up nearly about 30,000 tablets online with a price tag of Rs 2,500 with a delivery period of seven days.

Aakash comes with a 7 inch resistive touch screen display (800×480 pixel resolution).  It runs on Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system. It has a 366 MHz Connexant processor, 256MB of RAM and 2GB of internal memory expandable up to 32GB.

It has Wi-Fi, 2 USB ports and supports optional 3G modems. It has a battery life of 1.5 hours and weighs 350 gms.

Aakash’s next commercial version called the Ubislate 7, which has a faster processor, is slated to be launched late January. Ubislate 7 is set to have a 700 Mhz processor compared to the present one and will be priced at Rs 3000 for sale online.

UbiSlate 7 Tablet, the upgraded version of Aakash  has a more robust Arm 8- 700 MHz processor and longer battery life of 5 hours. It can be used for making calls as well.  The device was developed as part of the country’s aim to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities in an e-learning program.

The tablet was to be made available in retail stores by the end of November. “The delay in the availability of the tablet has been due to up gradation in the tablet and some unforeseen delay in manufacturing,” the spokesperson said.

According to sources, the Indian government is also planning to provide a new specification for Aakash, which may come with a faster processor and better battery life. The current version of Aakash has a battery life of about 1.5 hours.

The government till now procured only 10,000 tablets. It has still not procured the remaining 90,000 tablets for distribution in schools and colleges, even as other nations have expressed interest to the government for similar low-cost computing initiatives.

The ‘Aviva Great Wall of Education’ has earned its place in The Limca Book of Records 2011 for its debut year. The mega book donation drive collected 1,23,000 books for underprivileged children in 2009, has been recognized by the Limca Book of Records as a ‘huge wall of books’ in the country. Thousands of people from Delhi and NCR had donated their books over five days to help build the giant Wall of books.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gaurav Rajput, Director Marketing, Aviva India said, “At Aviva, we recognize that Education is Insurance for a better future, and this is also the thought behind our Street to School programme.

The recognition for the ‘Aviva Great Wall of Education’ in The Limca Book of Records will encourage us to work more towards bringing thousands of underprivileged closer to education. We plan to expand the footprint of the Aviva Great Wall of Education so that we can reach out to more underprivileged children and contribute towards a better, stronger and educated India.”

The Aviva Great Wall of Education was launched by Aviva India as a part of its global charity initiative ‘Street to School’ on National Education Day - November 11 in Delhi in 2009. The drive culminated on November 16, when the Honourable Union Human Resource Development Minister, Shri Kapil Sibal presented 123,000 books to the NGO- Save the Children, India. These books impacted close to 1,70,000 underprivileged children in projects supported by the NGO.

The Wall attained greater heights in 2010, when it was taken to four cities- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, collecting close to 9,50,000 books. These books have now been distributed amongst more than 500,000 children in projects supported by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and NGOs like Save the Children, Vidyarambam, Cini Asha and Khushii.
