World's smallest man 2012

A 72-year-old from Nepal has stepped forward in a bid to be crowned the world’s smallest man.

Chandra Bahadur Dangi is 56 centimetres (22 inches) tall and weighs just 12 kilos.

Mr Dangi considered his height a curse after a lifetime of being ridiculed by neighbours and laughed at in freakshows.

But life is set to change immeasurably for Mr Dangi, who lives alone in a remote valley in the Midwestern hills of the Jhapa district, if he is confirmed as the record holder.

He was encouraged to enter a late claim to the title by his family.

Officials from the Guinness Book of World Records have said they will fly out to Nepal to verify Mr Dangi’s claims.

He will need to be measured three times over the space of 24 hours to confirm his height.

The current record of world's smallest man is held by 18-year-old Filipino Junrey Balawing, who measures 59.93 centimetres.

The teenager hasn’t grown since he was one year old.

He claimed the title last year from Khagendra Thapa Magar, 18, who stands at 67 centimetres tall.
