Most of people dressed as smurfs set Guinness World Record on Peyo's birthday

Global Smurfs Day took place last Saturday in 11 cities around the world including Ireland as fans celebrated Peyo, the creator of the Smurfs, by dressing in white Smurf hat, white pants and shoes with blue bodies.

The event was organised by Sony Pictures Entertainment ahead of the release of The Smurfs in 3D, which features the voice of Katy Perry as Smurfette.
Speaking about the event Sony's Marc Weinstock said: "It's a thrill to see so many people turn out to be a part of this true fan moment in Smurfs history.

"Breaking a Guinness World Record on Global Smurfs Day is a testament to the enormous appeal and popularity of these beloved characters."

Adjudicators from Guinness World Records confirmed that a total of 4,891 people dressed as Smurfs beating the previous record of 2,510.

The global record was set by people dressed as Smurfs in eleven countries namely, Ireland, Belgium, Greece, Holland, Mexico, Panama, Poland, Russia, South Africa, USA and UK.

The Smurfs in 3D will open in Irish cinemas on Wednesday 10 August.
